About IELTS Writing practice

Writing has two tasks in 60 minutes. Task 2 contributes more to the Writing band, so spend about 40 minutes on the essay and 20 on Task 1. Academic Task 1 describes visuals; General Training Task 1 is a letter with a clear tone.

On DailyEnglishPro, practise Writing inside section packs, then paste essays into Writing Checker for criterion-level feedback. Free plans include limited AI credits; Pro adds a larger pool and Writing samples in the content library.

Tasks and prompt types

  • Academic Task 1

Charts, graphs, maps, or processes. Lead with a clear overview of the main trends, not a data dump.

  • General Training Task 1

Formal, semi-formal, or informal letters. Cover every bullet and match tone to the reader.

  • Task 2 opinion / discussion

State a position early. Keep paragraphs focused and finish with a conclusion that matches the intro.

  • Task 2 problem / advantage sets

Answer every part of the question. Unbalanced essays lose Task Response marks even with good grammar.

Strategies that move the needle

  1. 1

    Plan before you type

Spend 3–5 minutes outlining Task 2. A clear thesis beats a longer but wandering essay.

  2. 2

    Protect Task 2 time

If Task 1 overruns, you risk the heavier task. Practise the 20/40 split until it feels automatic.

  3. 3

    Rewrite with one criterion focus

After Checker feedback, rewrite once for TR, CC, LR, or GRA. That loop beats ten unreviewed essays.

  4. 4

    Collect flexible topic language

Build paraphrase chunks for education, environment, work, and technology instead of memorised whole essays.

How Writing feedback works here

Writing Checker estimates bands for Task Response / Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Treat scores as practice guidance aligned to public descriptors, not an official IELTS result.

Write under exam pressure, then get feedback

Practise Task 1 in 20 minutes and Task 2 in 40. Always include a clear overview (Task 1) and a consistent position (Task 2).

After you submit a pack, paste essays into the Writing Checker for TR/CC/LR/GRA feedback. Rewrite once focusing on your weakest criterion.

Task 2 carries more weight in the overall Writing band. Spend most of your weekly writing time on opinion, discussion and problem-solution prompts.

For Academic Task 1, select key trends instead of listing every number. For General Training letters, match tone to the prompt.
