About IELTS Speaking practice

Speaking is a face-to-face (or video) interview lasting 11–14 minutes: Part 1 personal questions, Part 2 a long turn from a cue card, and Part 3 a deeper discussion. The format is the same for Academic and General Training.

Practise with our topic bank inside Speaking section sessions. Record yourself, keep answers flexible rather than scripted, and use AI Speaking feedback when you want criterion-oriented notes. Pro unlocks model answers and strategy packs.

Parts you will practise

  • Part 1

Short questions on familiar topics. Extend with a reason and a small example, then stop cleanly.

  • Part 2

One minute to prepare, up to two minutes to speak. Use prep time for keywords, not a full script.

  • Part 3

Broader discussion. Compare, speculate, and justify. Show range without memorised speeches.

  • Fluency & coherence habits

Self-correct briefly, paraphrase when stuck, and keep a clear arc instead of listing memorised idioms.

Strategies that move the needle

  1. 1

Practise timed Part 2 every week

A two-minute long turn with a clear beginning, middle, and end beats reading model answers silently.

  2. 2

    Build flexible stories

Prepare adaptable anecdotes for work, study, hometown, and technology that you can reshape per cue card.

  3. 3

    Record and review

Listen for hesitation, repetition, and thin Part 3 answers. Mark one habit to fix per session.

  4. 4

    Do not memorise full scripts

Examiners recognise rehearsed speeches. Prepare vocabulary chunks and structures you can reuse.

How Speaking feedback works here

In-app Speaking sessions can use AI credits for fluency and criterion-oriented feedback. Pair that with Speaking Pro model answers when you need examples. Scores are practice estimates, not official examiner marks.

Build fluent answers without memorising scripts

Extend Part 1 answers with a reason and example. For Part 2, use prep time for keywords, then speak for up to two minutes with a clear arc. Part 3 rewards comparison and speculation.

Record yourself weekly. Compare structure with model answers in Speaking Pro, and use in-app Speaking sessions when you want criterion-oriented AI review.

Practise paraphrasing the same idea three ways so you can recover if you blank on a word mid-answer.

Rotate topics across work, study, hometown, technology and the environment so Part 1 and Part 3 feel familiar without sounding scripted.
