What Writing on Paper actually is

Writing on Paper is a delivery option for IELTS on computer. You still sit Listening and Reading on a computer. Writing tasks appear on screen, but you handwrite Task 1 and Task 2 on an official IELTS Writing answer sheet with a pen (IELTS on computer: Writing on Paper (IELTS.org)). Speaking stays face to face with an examiner.

It is not a return of the old fully paper-based test. Reading passages are still on screen, so pen markup of a printed booklet is gone. The hybrid exists for candidates who prefer handwriting for Writing while keeping computer-delivered speed and booking density. Official overview: IELTS test delivery updates (IELTS.org).

ComponentHow you take itTime
ListeningOn computerAbout 30 minutes
ReadingOn computer60 minutes
WritingQuestions on screen; handwritten answers60 minutes
SpeakingWith an examiner11-14 minutes

Same construct, different input method

Task types, timing and scoring criteria stay the same whether you type or handwrite Writing (IELTS on computer: Writing on Paper (IELTS.org); how IELTS is scored (IELTS.org)). IELTS partners report score comparability research between formats; still practise the mode you booked.

Eligibility, markets and UKVI

Writing on Paper is available for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training in selected countries from mid-2026 (IELTS on computer: Writing on Paper (IELTS.org)). Rollout is market-by-market and centre-by-centre. Australia lists participating centres and opening dates on IELTS Writing on Paper (IELTS Australia). British Council UK booking pages describe computer sittings with Writing on Paper in selected locations (IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper (British Council UK)).

Hard limit: Writing on Paper is not available for IELTS for UKVI. SELT sittings for UK Visas and Immigration are fully digital (IELTS test delivery updates (IELTS.org); UKVI SELT guidance (GOV.UK)). If your application needs a UKVI SELT, do not plan around handwriting Writing.

If offered locally

Usually can consider it

Standard Academic or General Training where the centre sells Writing on Paper.

  • •Confirm the exact venue, not only the city
  • •Check visa or uni acceptance of delivery mode
  • •Match OSR retake mode later if needed

UKVI

Cannot use Writing on Paper

IELTS for UKVI / SELT routes that require a fully digital test.

  • •Book fully computer-delivered IELTS for UKVI
  • •Practise typing under timed Writing
  • •Re-check GOV.UK SELT guidance before booking

★ Confirm before you pay

Publishing schedules change. If a blog or agent summarises Australia or UK dates, verify the live booking page for your centre on the official IDP or British Council site the same week you pay.

Test-day logistics

Expect a computer room for Listening and Reading, then a Writing stage where the prompt is on screen and your answers go on paper. Centres issue the Writing answer sheet and pen; follow invigilator instructions for when you may start writing and how to handle rough paper.

Results timing follows the computer-delivered track more closely than old paper processing. IELTS.org states results within five days for Writing on Paper, and the Test Report Form does not label that you chose handwriting (${CITE.writingOnPaper}). Some local pages advertise faster digital release; treat five days as the planning ceiling and confirm locally.

  1. 1Arrive for computer check-inID rules and security are the same as other computer sittings. Complete headset checks before Listening.
  2. 2Finish Listening and Reading on screenUse highlighting, flags and navigation as in a normal CBT sitting. There is no Listening transfer time.
  3. 3Switch to handwritten WritingRead tasks on screen. Plan briefly, then write clearly on the answer sheet. Manage the 60-minute clock without a live on-screen word counter for your handwriting.
  4. 4Leave materials in the roomReturn rough paper and follow staff instructions. Speaking may be the same day or nearby, depending on centre scheduling.
  • ✓Practise writing Task 1 and Task 2 by hand within 60 minutes at least three times before test day.
  • ✓Count words the way you will on the day (estimate by lines), because you will not have the CBT word counter for handwriting.
  • ✓Keep handwriting legible under speed; examiners need to read every sentence.

Typing vs handwriting: how to choose

Fully typed Writing wins when you edit heavily, rely on a live word count, and type faster than you write. Writing on Paper wins when your typed essays shrink under keyboard pressure but your handwritten essays keep clearer structure and richer wording.

Remember the trade: even with Writing on Paper, Reading is still on computer. If your main reason for wanting paper was annotating Reading passages, you still need on-screen highlighting practice. Compare formats in computer vs paper IELTS.

One Skill Retake and recognition

One Skill Retake can apply to Writing on Paper, but the retake must use the same Writing delivery mode as the original sitting (IELTS test delivery updates (IELTS.org); IELTS One Skill Retake (IELTS.org)). You cannot sit handwritten Writing and then retake typed Writing for the same OSR path.

Your TRF will not advertise that you chose Writing on Paper. Still confirm that your university, regulator or visa authority accepts the test type you booked (Academic vs General; UKVI vs standard). Recognition of bands is unchanged; administrative acceptance of SELT vs standard certificates is a separate check.

Practice plan before you sit

Train the hybrid explicitly. Do Listening and Reading on a computer-style mock, then write Task 1 and Task 2 by hand in the remaining 60 minutes. Alternate with fully typed Writing only if you might still switch booking modes.

Use Writing Checker on typed drafts to catch Task Response and cohesion issues, then rewrite the same outline by hand to transfer structure into handwriting stamina. Drill Task 2 shapes in Writing Task 2.

  1. 1Week -2: diagnoseOne timed handwritten Task 2 and one Task 1. Note whether length, legibility or planning collapses first.
  2. 2Week -1: hybrid mocksTwo sessions: computer Listening/Reading, then handwritten Writing. Review spelling and paragraphing under fatigue.
  3. 3Final 3 days: polish, do not cramOne light handwritten essay, sleep, and re-check centre instructions for answer sheets and ID.
