IELTS vocabulary level test
A professional IELTS vocabulary placement. See your level in minutes, and the topics holding your score back.
About 5 to 10 minutes. Free to start.
What you get from it
Listening and Reading turn on paraphrase. Writing and Speaking reward range, precision, and natural collocation. This test checks those three skills, from everyday words to academic language.
Questions cover meaning, paraphrase, and collocation in four topics IELTS uses constantly: education, the environment, technology, and health.
Sign in after you finish for a report with your level, the topics to work on first, and a short list of words to study. It guides your practice. It is not an official band.
Question types
- 1Meaning: choose the sense the word has in an IELTS-style sentence.
- 2Paraphrase: match a phrase to the word a reading passage would use instead.
- 3Collocation: choose the verb or adjective that belongs with the noun.
How to take it
If two options look possible, choose the one you have seen in a real sentence.
For collocations, pick the pair, not a word that is only related.
You can change an answer before you submit. Sign in afterwards for the full report.
Vocabulary size by IELTS band
Teachers often talk about vocabulary in these ranges. They are a study guide, not an official conversion. A larger vocabulary helps every paper, and the band still depends on how you use the words.
| Band | Word families | What this usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 2,500–4,000 | Everyday topics. Academic paraphrase is still thin. |
| 5.5 | 3,500–4,500 | Familiar topics, with gaps when the text turns academic. |
| 6 | 4,000–5,500 | Common IELTS topics. Collocation is still uneven. |
| 6.5 | 5,000–6,500 | A wider academic range. Less common pairs still slip. |
| 7 | 6,000–8,000 | Precise wording on familiar topics. Some style slips remain. |
| 7.5 | 7,500–9,000 | Flexible paraphrase and more exact collocation. |
| 8 and above | 9,000+ | A wide range used naturally, including less common items. |

IELTS vocabulary test questions
Is this a professional vocabulary test?
Yes. The questions test the vocabulary IELTS actually uses: meaning in context, paraphrase, and collocation. Listening and Reading depend on paraphrase. Writing and Speaking scores include range, precision, and natural word pairs. Items move from frequent words to academic words and the topics of education, the environment, technology, and health. The report gives you a level, the gaps to close, and a study list. It is built for IELTS preparation, and it does not claim to be an official band.
What is in the report?
A vocabulary level, an approximate word-family range, your stronger and weaker topics, the skills to practise next, and about 50 words chosen for your gaps. Sign in with a free account to open it.
Does a high result mean a higher IELTS band?
A wider vocabulary helps every paper, but a band also depends on timing, grammar, coherence, and how fully you answer. Use the result to decide what to study. Do not treat it as a predicted score.
How long does it take, and do I need an account?
Most people finish in 5 to 10 minutes. You can start straight away. The report opens after a free sign-in.
Can I take it again?
Yes. A new attempt replaces the one still on this screen. The report is only for this attempt. We do not keep a history of your results.
Who is this test for?
It is for anyone preparing for IELTS Academic or General Training who wants to see whether vocabulary is the first gap, before timing or grammar. Use it before a mock test, and when Writing or Speaking feedback keeps mentioning Lexical Resource.
How many words do I need for IELTS 7.5?
Teachers often place band 7.5 around 7,500 to 9,000 word families. That is a teaching range, not a rule from the exam boards. Knowing the words is not the same as using them precisely under time.
How can I improve my IELTS Lexical Resource score?
Build paraphrase and collocation on the topics this test marks as weak, then use that range in a timed essay and a speaking turn. A full mock shows whether the wider range still holds when the clock is running.
