How overall IELTS bands and cross-exam maps work

Official overall scores average Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, then round to the nearest 0.5 band.

Example: 6.5, 6.0, 6.0, 7.0 averages to 6.375 → typically reported as 6.5 after rounding rules.

TOEFL / PTE / Duolingo / CEFR rows use widely published concordance ranges for planning only. They are not a guarantee of admission or visa outcomes.

Worked example

Sections: L 7.0 · R 6.5 · W 6.0 · S 6.5. Average = 6.5 exactly → overall 6.5.

At IELTS 6.5, the comparison table often shows roughly TOEFL 79–93, PTE 58–64, Duolingo 110–115, CEFR B2. Your school may still ask for a different TOEFL or DET number - always verify.

When to use the converter

  • When a programme lists IELTS or TOEFL/PTE/Duolingo and you need a rough side-by-side check.
  • Before you decide whether to push Writing/Speaking with Checker credits or keep drilling L/R raw scores.

Overall band vs section floors

Candidates often chase an overall 7.0 while ignoring a Writing 6.0 minimum. The converter helps you see both the average and the imbalance.

Use Listening/Reading calculator numbers for objective skills, and honest Writing/Speaking estimates from descriptors or AI reports.

When the overall is close but one skill lags, spend the next week on that skill only, then sit another full mock.
