Is the CEFR mapping official?

It is an approximate study mapping commonly used by programmes. Universities may publish their own IELTS-to-CEFR tables. Always check the institution.

Can I convert IELTS to TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo exactly?

No. The cross-exam table is approximate concordance from published study ranges. Institutions set their own cut-offs (for example IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80 / PTE 58 / DET 110). Always verify the programme page.

Which tests appear in the comparison?

Should I enter predicted Writing/Speaking bands?

Yes, if you only have practice estimates. Mark them as estimates in your notes so you do not treat AI or self-scores as official results.

What if one skill is far below the others?

Overall averaging can hide a weak skill. Many programmes also set minimum section bands. Check both overall and per-skill requirements.

How overall IELTS bands and cross-exam maps work

Official overall scores average Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, then round to the nearest 0.5 band.

Example: 6.5, 6.0, 6.0, 7.0 averages to 6.375 → typically reported as 6.5 after rounding rules.

TOEFL / PTE / Duolingo / CEFR rows use widely published concordance ranges for planning only. They are not a guarantee of admission or visa outcomes.

Worked example

Sections: L 7.0 · R 6.5 · W 6.0 · S 6.5. Average = 6.5 exactly → overall 6.5.

At IELTS 6.5, the comparison table often shows roughly TOEFL 79–93, PTE 58–64, Duolingo 110–115, CEFR B2. Your school may still ask for a different TOEFL or DET number - always verify.

Overall band vs section floors

Candidates often chase an overall 7.0 while ignoring a Writing 6.0 minimum. The converter helps you see both the average and the imbalance.
