How Long Is an IELTS Score Valid? 2-Year Rule Explained (2026)

IELTS results are generally accepted for 2 years. What the 2-year rule really means, when older results still count, verification limits and visa exceptions.

7 min read·Published Oct 30, 2026

Quick answer

IELTS results do not technically "expire", but the IELTS partners recommend that organisations accept a result for a maximum of 2 years from the test date. Most universities and visa authorities follow that rule. A few rules differ, so always check the organisation you are applying to.

Age of resultWhat usually happens
Under 2 yearsGenerally accepted, if it meets the score requirement
Over 2 yearsUsually rejected, unless the organisation accepts proof you kept up your English
Over 3 yearsIELTS partners may not investigate verification requests further

Where the 2-year rule comes from

IELTS.org tells organisations that it recommends a Test Report Form (TRF) be treated as valid for a maximum of two years, because language ability can decline when it is not used. An organisation that receives an older TRF should accept it only with evidence that the candidate has maintained or improved their English (Verifying IELTS results).

So the two years is a recommendation to the people reading your result, not a date printed as an expiry on the certificate. In practice the effect is the same: if your result is older than two years when you apply, expect to be asked for a new test.

The rule protects both sides. A university or visa officer wants evidence of your English as it is now, and two years is the window the IELTS partners consider reliable. Organisations can choose to be stricter, so a scholarship or employer may ask for a result taken within the last year or less.

Which date counts: test date, not results date

The two years are counted from the test date on your TRF. The date your results arrived or the date you downloaded your eTRF does not extend it.

Many organisations look at the date your application is submitted or decided, not the date you finished your course search. If your result will turn two years old during a long application process, ask the organisation which date they use before you rely on it.

★ Plan backwards

If a deadline is 20 months after your test, you are fine. If it is 23 or 24 months after, book a new test early instead of hoping the application closes in time.

Visa applications add another layer. Some routes require the result to be valid when you lodge the application, others when the visa is decided, and a few set different periods altogether. If a visa officer could look at your file months after you apply, leave a generous margin.

How common destinations apply it

UseTypical ruleCheck here
UniversitiesMost ask for a result under 2 years old at application or enrolmentThe course's English requirements page
UK visas (UKVI)A Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI must be valid and from an approved providerUKVI SELT guidance
Australia visasValidity depends on visa subclass; tests taken before 7 August 2025 may stay valid for up to 3 years for some subclassesHome Affairs: competent English
Canada immigrationIRCC uses its own validity rules for approved language testsIRCC language testing
Professional registrationRegulators set their own rules, often 2 yearsYour regulator's English page

Treat this table as a starting point only. Visa and university rules change, and exceptions often depend on the exact visa or course, so read the current official page before you book or submit.

Extra TRFs, eTRFs and verification after 2 years

Test centres generally stop sending additional TRFs to organisations once a result is two years old, and computer-delivered results are normally downloadable for the same period. If you know you will apply to several places, send your results while they are still in that window.

Most universities now verify results online rather than relying on a paper copy, so keep your candidate number and test date somewhere safe. If you change your name, passport or email between the test and your application, tell the organisation, because the details on your TRF must match your documents.

Organisations can still use the online Results Verification Service for older TRFs, but IELTS.org notes that for TRFs more than three years old, verification requests will not be investigated further (Verifying IELTS results).

If your result is about to expire

  1. 1Check the exact ruleFind the organisation's own wording: test date or application date, and whether they ever accept older results.
  2. 2Ask about evidenceSome universities accept proof of English use, such as recent study in English. Ask before assuming.
  3. 3Book earlyComputer-delivered IELTS usually returns results within a few days, which helps when time is short.
  4. 4Know the limits of One Skill RetakeOne Skill Retake must be taken within 60 days of your original test, so it cannot refresh an old result. Book a full new test instead.

Refresh your skills before retaking

If it has been two years since your last test, your timing and stamina may have slipped even if your English has not. A couple of full timed mocks will show you where to focus.

FAQ

Does an IELTS certificate have an expiry date printed on it?+

No. The TRF shows your test date. The 2-year limit is the IELTS partners' recommendation to organisations, which most follow.

Can I use a 3-year-old IELTS score?+

Only if the organisation explicitly accepts older results, which is rare. Some Australian visa subclasses accept tests taken before 7 August 2025 for up to 3 years, so check the Home Affairs page for your subclass.

Is the 2 years counted from the results date?+

No. It is counted from the test date shown on your Test Report Form.

Can I get my old results resent after 2 years?+

Usually not. Centres generally stop issuing additional TRFs after two years, so send results to all organisations while they are still valid.

Does a higher score last longer?+

No. A Band 8.5 and a Band 5.5 follow the same recommendation. The age of the result matters, not the score.
