How to use this list
Academic Task 1 rewards a clear overview and accurate trend or comparison language. These 80 phrases cover overview openers, rise/fall wording, comparisons and time markers.
Prefer precise, calm language over dramatic verbs. Pair each phrase with a real figure from the chart.
- Write the overview first using one opener + one overall pattern phrase
- Pick 6-8 trend verbs or comparison frames for the body
- Never invent numbers; attach every claim to data

Overview openers
Start the overview with the big picture, not every number.

Overall trend language
Describe the direction of change without listing every data point.

Rise / fall verbs & adverbs
Vary verbs and strength adverbs so detail paragraphs do not sound repetitive.

Comparison & proportion
Compare categories and describe shares for bars, tables and pie charts.

Should every sentence use a phrase from this list?+
No. Use a few accurate frames. Overloading rare synonyms can hurt Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
Do maps and processes use the same phrases?+
Overview openers transfer. Trend verbs are for change-over-time charts. For maps/process, prefer location and sequence language in our Task 1 Academic guides.
