What Is a Good IELTS Score for University and PR
What counts as a good IELTS score depends on your goal. See typical overall and per skill bands for universities, student visas and permanent residency.
There is no single good score
A good IELTS score is the one that meets your specific requirement. For one candidate that is 6.0 for a foundation course. For another it is 7.0 in every skill for a nursing registration, or CLB 9 for an Express Entry profile. A score that is excellent for one goal can be a failure for another.
That is why the first question should not be what is a good score, but what score does my target need, overall and in each skill. Many people only discover the per skill minimum after they have booked and sat the exam. Check the requirement first, then plan backwards using the IELTS study plan for 30, 60 and 90 days.
For a general explanation of what each band means, read the band score chart. The figures below are typical ranges. Always confirm the current rule on the official website of the university, immigration authority or professional body, because requirements change.
Typical scores by goal
The table shows common ranges, not guarantees. Individual courses, visa routes and professions can ask for more or less.
| Goal | Typical overall | Typical minimum per skill |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation or pathway course | 5.0 to 5.5 | 4.5 to 5.0 |
| Undergraduate degree | 6.0 to 6.5 | 5.5 to 6.0 |
| Postgraduate degree | 6.5 to 7.0 | 6.0 to 6.5 |
| Law, medicine or competitive programmes | 7.0 to 7.5 | 6.5 to 7.0 |
| Nursing or health registration | 7.0 or similar | Often 6.5 to 7.0, writing sometimes higher |
| Skilled migration or PR points | Varies by country | Often 6.0 to 8.0 depending on points |
For UK study and visas, see IELTS UK universities and UKVI. For Canada, read IELTS Canada CLB and immigration. For Australia, use IELTS Australia study and visa, and for the US and New Zealand, see IELTS requirements for the US and New Zealand.
What scores mean for PR and immigration
Permanent residency routes usually do not ask for a single pass mark. They award points for language ability, and higher bands earn more points. The goal is therefore not just to pass, but to reach the band that gives you the points you need.
In Canada, IELTS General Training scores are converted to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). As a rough guide, CLB 7 needs about 6.0 in each skill, and CLB 9 needs about 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking. In Australia, skilled migration uses levels such as Competent (6.0 each), Proficient (7.0 each) and Superior (8.0 each), which add different points. Check the latest tables before you plan.
| Route | Why bands matter | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Express Entry | Higher CLB adds points and can decide invitation rounds | CLB per skill, not only overall |
| Australia skilled migration | Competent, Proficient or Superior English adds points | Whether you need all skills at the same level |
| UK skilled worker or student visa | Requires an approved test and set level | Whether you need the UKVI version of the test |
| Nursing and health registration | Strict minimums in each skill | Whether scores can be combined from two sittings |
How to decide your target score
- 1Find the official requirementCheck the university course page, the visa page or the registration body for overall and per skill minimums. Screenshot or note the date so you can recheck.
- 2Add a safety marginIf you need 6.5 in each skill, aim for 7.0 in practice mocks. IELTS scores can vary by half a band on the day, especially in Writing and Speaking.
- 3Compare with your diagnosticSit a timed mock and compute your bands with the score calculator. Subtract current from target for each skill.
- 4Choose the timelineHalf a band in 4 to 8 weeks, one band in 8 to 12 weeks, more than one band in 12 weeks or longer. See how to improve IELTS from 5.5 to 6.5 and how to improve IELTS from 6 to 7.
Is 7 or 8 worth the extra effort
Only if your goal needs it. Going from 6.5 to 7.0 usually takes a lot of targeted work on small errors, and going from 7.0 to 8.0 takes much more. If a university accepts 6.5, extra months for 7.5 may not change your outcome. If your migration points depend on higher CLB or a higher language level, the extra band may be worth it.
If you are aiming for high bands, read high band tips first to understand what examiners reward at 7.0 and above. Then use Listening practice, Reading practice, Writing practice and Speaking practice to train the weakest skill, and check Writing drafts in the Writing Checker.
- 6.0 to 6.5: enough for many undergraduate courses and some visas.
- 7.0: strong for postgraduate study, many professional bodies and extra points in migration systems.
- 7.5 to 8.0: competitive programmes and maximum points for some routes.
- 8.5 to 9.0: rarely required. Treat it as a bonus, not a standard.
Good IELTS score questions
Is IELTS 6.5 a good score?+
Yes for many undergraduate and some postgraduate courses, but it may not meet nursing, law or high points immigration targets. Always check your specific requirement.
Is IELTS 7 enough for PR?+
It depends on the country and system. 7.0 in each skill is strong in Canada and Australia, but your final invitation or points depend on age, work experience and other factors.
How long is an IELTS score valid?+
Most institutions and immigration authorities accept results for 2 years from the test date. Confirm the rule for your destination.
Can I combine scores from different tests?+
Some universities and bodies allow it, many do not. Check the rule before you plan a retake. See IELTS one skill retake for options where available.
What if my overall score is enough but one skill is too low?+
You will often still be rejected, because many requirements apply per skill. Focus your retake plan on that skill and read retakes, mistakes and weak skills.
