How to Get IELTS Band 7 in 30 Days
Can you reach IELTS band 7 in 30 days? Yes, if you already score around 6.5. Here is how to check, plan 4 weeks, and avoid the shortcuts that backfire.
Who can realistically reach band 7 in 30 days
Band 7 in 30 days is realistic for one kind of candidate: someone who already scores about 6.5 overall in a recent timed mock, with no skill below 6.0. If that is you, you are closing a gap of half a band, and four focused weeks can do it.
If you are at 5.5 or 6.0, 30 days will not get you to 7. You will improve, but a full band or more needs a longer plan. Read how to improve IELTS from 5.5 to 6.5 and the IELTS study plan for 30, 60 and 90 days instead. Promising a result in 30 days to someone at 5.5 is the main reason people burn out and rebook.
| Your current level | 30 days to band 7? | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5 overall, no skill below 6.0 | Realistic | Follow the 4 week plan below |
| 6.5 overall, one skill at 5.5 | Possible but risky | Spend 60 percent of time on that skill and add a week if you can |
| 6.0 overall | Unlikely | Plan 8 to 10 weeks, see the 6 to 7 guide |
| 5.5 or below | No | Plan 12 weeks or more and aim for 6.5 first |
Week 0: the 2 hour diagnostic
Before day 1, spend 2 to 3 hours on a full diagnostic. Sit Listening, Reading and Writing Task 2 in real timing, and record a Speaking attempt. Use the score calculator to convert raw scores, and paste your Task 2 into the Writing Checker to see where you lose marks on task response and grammar.
At band 6.5 the lost marks are usually narrow. In Listening and Reading you might drop 3 to 5 marks to the same two question types. In Writing you probably have a clear position but weak development or limited vocabulary precision. In Speaking you might be fluent but repetitive. Write down the top two weaknesses per skill. Those eight items are your entire month.
The 4 week plan
- 1Week 1: Repair the top two weaknesses per skillDrill only the question types and criteria from your diagnostic. One Listening or Reading section per day, plus two Task 2 essays and daily 5 minute Speaking recordings. Review each error the same day.
- 2Week 2: Raise accuracy under timeDo full length Listening and Reading sets back to back. Rewrite one Task 2 essay using feedback. In Speaking, practise extending answers with a reason, a contrast and an example.
- 3Week 3: Two half mocks and range workSit two half mocks (for example Listening plus Reading, then Writing plus Speaking). Build a list of 15 topic phrases you will actually use, such as for education, environment and technology.
- 4Week 4: Two full mocks, then taperSit two complete mocks in the first 4 days. Spend days 5 to 7 reviewing mistakes only. In the last 48 hours do light practice and sleep. See the last 7 days checklist.
| Weekly hours | Fits who | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| 15 hours | Full time workers with strong discipline | Little room for a missed day |
| 20 hours | Most candidates aiming for 7 in 30 days | Fatigue in week 3 if sleep is poor |
| 25 hours or more | Full time students or people on leave | Diminishing returns if you do not review |
What moves a 6.5 to a 7 in each skill
At 6.5 you do not need new techniques. You need fewer errors and more precision.
- Listening: aim for 30 out of 40. Most lost marks at this level are Section 3 and 4 distractors and plural or spelling errors. See listening distractors and spelling and drill in Listening practice.
- Reading: aim for 30 out of 40. Practise Matching Headings and True, False, Not Given under 18 to 20 minutes per passage. Use Reading practice.
- Writing: aim for a clear position, fully developed ideas, and a visible range of sentence forms. Fix error free sentences before adding complex ones. Check drafts in the Writing Checker and practise in Writing practice.
- Speaking: expand answers naturally with reasons and examples, use a few less common phrases correctly, and recover from errors without stopping. Record sessions in Speaking practice.

Shortcuts that backfire
Avoid
What people try
These feel productive but rarely add marks.
- •Memorising full essays and Speaking answers
- •Using rare words you cannot spell or use naturally
- •Doing only the skill you enjoy
- •Taking a mock every day without review
Do this
What works instead
These target the criteria examiners actually mark.
- •Memorising flexible structures, then writing new content
- •Using accurate topic vocabulary you have practised aloud
- •Spending extra time on your lowest skill
- •One mock per week with a full error review
Questions about a 30 day plan for band 7
Is 30 days enough for band 7 from 6.0?+
Usually not. A half band gain in a month is common, a full band is rare. Plan 8 to 10 weeks from 6.0 and use the study plan.
Do I need 7 in every skill or 7 overall?+
It depends on the requirement. Check your university or visa rules first. You can see typical thresholds in the band score chart.
Which skill is easiest to push up quickly?+
Listening and Reading, because answers are right or wrong and error patterns are easy to fix. Writing takes longest because it needs feedback and rewriting.
Should I take the exam at the end of day 30?+
Book only if your last two full mocks are at 7.0 in every skill you need. If not, delay by a week or two rather than risk a fee and a result you do not want.
Can a tutor guarantee band 7 in 30 days?+
No honest tutor can. Guarantees ignore your baseline. Ask for a diagnostic first and a plan based on your numbers.
