IDP vs British Council IELTS: Is There a Difference? (2026)
IDP or British Council for IELTS? Same test, same marking and same certificate. What actually differs: centres, dates, fees, booking portals and free prep.
Quick answer
There is no difference in the test or the score. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and both providers use the same question bank, band descriptors, examiner training and certificate. Choose the provider whose centre, dates, fee and support suit you best.

| Marking criteria and band scores | Available dates and delivery options |

Who runs IELTS: three partners, one test
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment (About IELTS). Cambridge develops and produces the test materials, while the British Council and IDP deliver the test through their own centres and partner venues. That is why you see two brands selling the same exam.
The British Council says plainly that IELTS "is exactly the same at both test centres" and that neither version is easier (British Council: where to take IELTS). IDP publishes the same message on its own pages. A Band 7 from one provider is the same Band 7 from the other.
What is identical, whichever provider you book
- Questions come from the same centrally developed question bank, so neither provider has an easier paper.
- Examiners are certified through the same process and mark Writing and Speaking against the same public band descriptors.
- Raw scores convert to bands with the same method, and results are issued on the same Test Report Form with the same security features.
- Universities, employers and governments that accept IELTS do not ask which provider you used.
What can actually differ
The differences are practical, not academic. They are worth comparing before you pay, because they decide how easy test day and any later changes will be.
| Factor | Why it matters | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Centre location | Travel time and familiarity on the day | Search both providers' centre finders for your city |
| Dates and slots | Computer-delivered sessions and Speaking slots vary by venue | Compare the next 4-6 weeks on both sites |
| Fee | Each provider sets its local price in many markets | Read each provider's official fee page for your country |
| Admin rules | Transfer, cancellation and extra TRF steps run through the provider you booked | Read the terms before paying |
| Free prep package | Unlocks after booking with that provider | See the prep section below |
Coverage is also uneven. The British Council describes a presence in about 140 countries and IDP in around 60, so in some countries only one provider runs IELTS (British Council). Delivery models change too: in Japan, IDP-side test centres have been run by its partner JSAF since February 2026 (IDP Japan notice). Always check your own country rather than relying on an old forum post.
Free preparation from each provider
British Council offers IELTS Ready, a free package for anyone who signs up, and IELTS Ready Premium, which is free from booking a British Council test until 7 days after your test date. Premium adds more full mock tests, AI feedback on Writing and Speaking, full skills courses and on-demand webinars (IELTS Ready).
IDP publishes free familiarisation tests for Listening, Reading and Writing, a Speaking Part 1 sample, podcasts and masterclasses through its IELTS Prepare hub (IDP prepare). Both are useful; neither changes how your test is marked.
Each provider also runs its own booking account. British Council candidates manage bookings and results through the British Council's online account, while IDP candidates use IDP's IELTS account and app. Whichever you choose, keep your confirmation email, because transfers, cancellations and extra Test Report Forms are handled by the provider you booked with.
You can use both providers' free materials no matter where you book. The only part tied to your booking is any premium package, so if two centres are otherwise equal, the prep bundle can be a reasonable tie-breaker.
How to choose in five minutes

- 3Compare dates and results speedComputer-delivered IELTS usually returns results in a few days. Pick the earliest date that still leaves you time to prepare.
- 4Compare fees and rulesCheck the official fee and the transfer or cancellation terms on each provider's local page.
- 5Book and use the prep bundleAfter booking, start the provider's free prep and add timed full mocks so the format feels routine.
Practise on the real format
Provider choice will not move your band score, but preparation will. Timed full tests are the fastest way to find which skill is holding you back.
FAQ
Is IDP or British Council IELTS easier?+
Neither. Both deliver the same test from the same question bank and mark it against the same band descriptors, so difficulty does not depend on the provider.
Will a university or visa office prefer one provider?+
No. Organisations that accept IELTS accept results from both providers, because the Test Report Form is the same. Check only the test type and minimum scores they require.
Can I book with IDP after failing to reach my target with British Council?+
Yes. You can book your next test with either provider. Your previous result does not transfer or affect the new test.
Are the fees the same?+
Not always. In many countries each provider publishes its own local fee, so compare the official pages for your country before booking.
Can I switch provider after booking?+
Not directly. Transfers and cancellations follow the terms of the provider you booked with, so moving to the other provider normally means cancelling under those terms and booking again.
