IELTS General Training vs Academic Reading
Compare IELTS General Training and Academic Reading: passage structure, text types, question types, band conversion differences and how to prepare for each.
Same time, same number of questions, different texts
Both IELTS Academic and General Training Reading last 60 minutes and contain 40 questions. The skill being measured is the same: finding information, following arguments and understanding detail. What changes is the type of text you read, the length of each passage, and the number of correct answers you need for a given band.
Choose your test type by your goal. Academic is for university entry and some professional registration. General Training is mainly for migration, work experience and secondary study. Always confirm with the institution or immigration body before booking.

How the General Training sections are built
Easier
Section 1: social survival
Two or three short everyday texts such as adverts, timetables, notices and leaflets.
- •Heavy on scanning for dates, prices and conditions
- •Questions often sentence completion or matching
- •Speed matters: aim for under 15 minutes
Medium
Section 2: workplace survival
Two texts about work: job descriptions, contracts, training, workplace rules.
- •More formal vocabulary
- •Matching information and headings are common
- •Aim for about 20 minutes
Hardest
Section 3: general reading
One long, more complex text from a magazine or book, closer in style to Academic.
- •Opinion and argument appear
- •True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given are possible
- •Leave 25 minutes
Academic Reading is three texts of rising difficulty with more abstract topics such as science, history and social trends. If you already read journals or long-form articles, Academic may feel natural. If you mostly read short everyday texts, General Training will feel closer to daily life.
Band conversion is not the same
This is the detail many candidates miss. The same raw score gives a lower band in General Training than in Academic, because GT texts are generally easier. The numbers below are typical approximations. They shift slightly between test versions, so treat them as guidance, not a promise.
| Band | Academic (out of 40) | General Training (out of 40) |
|---|---|---|
| 5.0 | 15 | 23 |
| 5.5 | 19 | 27 |
| 6.0 | 23 | 30 |
| 6.5 | 27 | 32 |
| 7.0 | 30 | 34 |
| 7.5 | 33 | 35 |
| 8.0 | 35 | 37 |
| 8.5 | 37 | 39 |
How to prepare for each
Depth

Build stamina and comfort with dense, abstract texts.

- •Practise paragraph mapping and summaries
- •Drill headings and opinion tasks
- •Time passages at 20 minutes each
Speed and accuracy
General Training plan
Protect your marks in the first two sections and save time for the last.
- •Practise scanning adverts, timetables and notices
- •Target 15 minutes for Section 1, 20 for Section 2, 25 for Section 3
- •Build precision: one careless slip can cost a band
- •Practise one long text weekly for Section 3
- If you are not sure which test you need, check the requirements of the institution before you book.
- Use Reading practice to practise the correct format and a mock test to check timing.
- For general timing strategy read Reading timing and question types.
Which test is easier?
It depends on you. GT texts are simpler but require a higher raw score, so small mistakes cost more. Academic texts are harder but the scoring curve is more forgiving. Do not choose based on difficulty; choose based on what your target institution accepts. Switching to the 'easier' test is not an option if it is not valid for your purpose.
If you are stuck at a particular band, the problem is rarely test type. It is usually time management and question-type accuracy. See Reading mistakes that cap band 6 for the habits that matter in both versions.
Practise next
Is General Training Reading easier than Academic?+
The texts are easier, but the raw score needed for each band is higher. Overall difficulty is similar for most candidates.
Can I take both tests?+
Yes, but you register for one version at a time. Reading and Writing are different. Listening and Speaking are the same in both.
Do both versions have 40 questions in 60 minutes?+
Yes. Neither version gives extra time to transfer answers in Reading, so write directly in your answer sheet.
Which version do immigration bodies usually require?+
Many accept General Training, but requirements vary by country and visa. Always confirm with the official source.
How do I know my target raw score?+
Use the score calculator with the correct test type selected, then compare against your recent mock test results.
