Build Task 1 vocabulary by function, not by chart

Academic Task 1 repeats the same jobs across line graphs, bar charts, tables and pie charts: describe change, compare size, highlight extremes and write an overview. Learning vocabulary by those functions is more efficient than separate lists for every visual type.

Map and process tasks need extra location and sequence language, but your core trend and comparison bank still does most of the work for data tasks.

★ Accuracy beats drama

Use soared or plummeted only when the data truly show a sharp change. Exaggeration is a Lexical Resource and Task Achievement problem.

  • Trend verbs: what happened over time
  • Degree adverbs: how fast or how much
  • Comparison phrases: which was larger, closer or highest
  • Overview frames: main features without listing every number

Trend verbs you can trust

Vary verbs, but keep tense consistent with the time period on the chart. Past dates usually need past simple. Forecasts may need will or is expected to.

DirectionNeutralStrong / fastSlow / small
Upincrease, rise, grow, climbsurge, soar, leapedge up, inch up, rise slightly
Downdecrease, fall, decline, dropplunge, plummet, sinkdip, ease, fall slightly
No changeremain stable, stay constant, level offstabilise after a rise/fallfluctuate around a level
Up then downpeak at, reach a high ofhit a peak before fallingrise to a high and then decline
Down then upbottom out at, reach a low ofrecover from a lowfall to a low and then rebound
Useful sentence framesExample
X rose from A to B between ...Car ownership rose from 35% to 48% between 2005 and 2015.
X peaked at ... in ...Tourist arrivals peaked at 2.1 million in July.
After peaking, X fell to ...After peaking in 2018, sales fell to just under 900 units.
X remained relatively stable at around ...Unemployment remained relatively stable at around 5%.
X fluctuated between A and BWeekly prices fluctuated between $12 and $18.

Degree, comparison and proportion language

Degree adverbs stop every sentence sounding identical. Comparison language is essential for bar charts and tables with categories. Proportion phrases matter for pie charts and share data.

TypeBankExample
Degreeslightly, gradually, steadily, sharply, dramatically, significantlyExports rose sharply in the final quarter.
Comparisonhigher than, lower than, twice as high as, almost equal to, the highest / lowestCountry A was almost twice as high as Country B.
Rankingranked first, came second, was the least popularWalking ranked first among daily commute modes.
Proportionaccounted for, made up, represented, constitutedRenewables accounted for just over a third of supply.
Approximationabout, around, roughly, just under, just over, approximatelyJust under 40% of respondents preferred online learning.

Repetitive

Weak report language

Same verb and vague comparison.

  • •The number increased. Then it increased again.
  • •A was big. B was small.
  • •Many people liked cars.

Precise

Stronger report language

Varied verbs and measurable contrast.

  • •The figure rose steadily, then levelled off.
  • •A was significantly higher than B.
  • •Cars accounted for the largest share.

Numbers, time phrases and safe quantifiers

Task 1 also needs clean ways to place figures in time and to talk about amount without inventing false precision. These frames transfer across almost every data chart.

NeedUseful framesExample
Exact figurestood at, was, reachedIn 2012, the figure stood at 18%.
Range over timefrom ... to ..., between ... and ...Output rose from 2.1 to 3.4 million tonnes.
Time anchorover the period, during the final year, by 2020By 2020, renewables had become the second-largest source.
Large sharethe majority of, a substantial proportion ofThe majority of trips were made by public transport.
Small sharea minority of, a small fraction of, only a tiny shareOnly a tiny share of households used solar power.
Difference sizea gap of, a difference of, narrowly higher thanThere was a gap of nearly 15 percentage points.
No data dramarelatively, comparatively, broadly similarThe two regions remained broadly similar after 2015.

Do not invent precision

If the chart is hard to read exactly, use about / around / just under / just over. False exactness is worse than honest approximation.

Overview, process and map essentials

An overview needs big-picture language, not a second data dump. Process and map tasks recycle a smaller set of verbs and prepositions that you can prepare in advance.

Task needUseful languageExample
Overview openerOverall, In general, It is clear thatOverall, both cities grew, but City X rose more sharply.
Main featurethe most striking feature, the largest change, a clear differenceThe most striking feature is the decline in coal use.
Process sequencefirst, next, then, after that, finally, subsequentlyThe mixture is heated and then cooled before packaging.
Process verbsis collected, is filtered, is transported, is converted intoWaste water is filtered before it is released.
Map locationto the north of, adjacent to, opposite, replaced, expandedA car park was added to the north of the station.
Map changewas converted into, was demolished, was extended, was constructedThe library was converted into a community centre.
  1. 1Collect 8 trend verbsFour up, two down, one stable, one peak/bottom. Practise them on any line graph.
  2. 2Add 6 comparison frameshigher than, the highest, twice as, almost equal, ranked first, accounted for.
  3. 3Write one overview onlyForce yourself to name two main features without copying numbers into the overview.
  4. 4Specialise lastAdd process verbs or map prepositions only after the core bank is automatic.

How many Task 1 words do I need?+

A controlled bank of roughly 80-100 functional phrases covers most data tasks. Depth of accurate use matters more than memorising 300 near-synonyms.

Can I use the same verbs in every report?+

Some repetition is normal, but vary at least the main trend verbs and comparison structures so Lexical Resource does not look limited.

Should I learn different lists for bar charts and line graphs?+

Learn by function first. Add only small extensions for maps and processes.

Is soared always better than increased?+

No. Choose the verb that matches the size and speed of change on the chart.

What should I practise next?+

Write one timed Task 1 using only this bank, then check overview quality and verb accuracy in Writing Checker.
