Vocabulary Mistakes That Cap IELTS Band 6

Fix the vocabulary mistakes that keep IELTS candidates at Band 6: wrong collocations, forced rare words, register errors, paraphrase drift and repetition without control.

Band 6 vocabulary is often ambitious but unstable

Many Band 6 candidates already know a decent number of words. The ceiling appears when less common vocabulary is attempted with weak control: wrong partners, slightly wrong meaning, awkward register or so many errors that the message blurs.

Band 7 Lexical Resource is less about sounding fancy and more about using a flexible range accurately, with awareness of style and collocation. Fixing a short list of high-frequency mistakes often moves scores faster than memorising another 200 isolated words.

★ Control beats decoration

A precise mid-level sentence scores higher than an advanced word used incorrectly. If you cannot use a word safely in a new sentence, do not force it into the exam.

Unstable

Typical Band 6 pattern

Range is visible, but errors keep appearing.

  • •Rare words with wrong collocations
  • •Paraphrase that changes the meaning
  • •Same vague adjectives repeated

Controlled

Band 7 pattern

Less common items appear, but they fit.

  • •Natural collocations
  • •Paraphrase that keeps meaning
  • •Topic words used flexibly

Mistake 1: wrong collocations

Collocation errors are some of the easiest for examiners to spot because they sound immediately unnatural even when the idea is clear.

Common Band 6 formNatural formNote
make a research / do a researchdo research / conduct researchResearch is uncountable in this use
do a crimecommit a crimeFixed verb-noun pair
make exercisetake exercise / work out / exerciseMake is the wrong partner
discuss aboutdiscussDiscuss already includes the idea of about
enter into the universityenter university / be admitted to universityEnter into often means begin a formal agreement
big damageserious damage / cause damageDamage prefers different partners
strengthen the security more betterstrengthen security / improve securityDouble comparative + weak collocation
give a good impacthave a positive impact onImpact collocates with have / on

Mistake 2: forced rare words and paraphrase drift

Thesaurus paraphrasing creates two Band 6 problems. First, the substitute may be slightly wrong. Second, candidates change every repeated noun even when repetition is natural and clear.

Risky upgradeWhy it failsSafer rewrite
children → offspring in a school essayWrong tone and usually wrong contextchildren / young people / students
important → primordialOverly rare and often inaccurateimportant / significant / essential
help → facilitate in every sentenceSounds heavy and sometimes wronghelp / support / make it easier to
people → individuals / masses repeatedlyUnnatural variationRepeat people, or use residents / workers when precise
because → due to the fact that alwaysWordy without added meaningbecause / since / due to + noun

Repetition is not automatically Band 6

Repeating key nouns such as education, traffic or children can be clearer than forced synonyms. Vary verbs and adjectives first.

Mistake 3: register clashes and empty fillers

Register mistakes cut across Writing and Speaking. Empty intensifiers also weaken Lexical Resource because they add emotion without precision.

  1. Essay tone in Speaking: Moreover, I am of the opinion that... in Part 1 sounds memorised.
  2. Chat tone in Academic Writing: kids, guys, stuff, a lot of, really really important.
  3. Empty intensifiers: very very, so many, really big problem with no concrete noun.
  4. Template residue: With the development of science and technology used for unrelated prompts.
  5. Idiom stacking: two or three idioms in one Part 3 answer usually sound unnatural.
Weak fillerMore precise option
a very big problema serious public-health challenge
good for societybeneficial for community wellbeing
bad effectharmful effect / negative consequence
more and more peoplea growing number of people
in modern society nowadaystoday / in many cities today

Mistake 4: spelling, countable nouns and lookalikes

Some Band 6 scripts lose Lexical Resource marks through spelling and form issues that look small but repeat across the paper. These are high-value repairs because they appear in both Writing and Listening answer transfers.

TrapCorrect useWhy it matters
enviroment / govermentenvironment / governmentHigh-frequency academic misspellings
informations / advicesinformation / adviceUncountable nouns
affect / effect mixaffect = verb; effect = noun (usually)Meaning looks almost right but is wrong
loose / loselose a job; loose clothingDifferent words entirely
quiet / quitequiet place; quite difficultSpelling swap changes meaning
then / thanhigher than; then it fellComparison vs sequence
depend of / consist of mix-upsdepend on; consist ofFixed prepositions
successful / successfullsuccessfulDouble-letter errors under time pressure

A repair plan that actually raises Lexical Resource

Do not respond to Band 6 vocabulary feedback by only collecting harder words. Respond by removing unstable items and strengthening high-frequency chunks.

  1. 1Audit one full mockHighlight every vocabulary error and label it: collocation, wrong form, register, or meaning drift.
  2. 2Build a personal danger listKeep the ten errors you repeat most. These are your real Band 6 ceiling.
  3. 3Replace each error with one safe chunkExample: make exercise becomes work out three times a week.
  4. 4Practise retrieval aloud or in writingUse each safe chunk in two new topics within 24 hours.
  5. 5Re-test under timed conditionsOnly then add new less-common vocabulary, one family or collocation set at a time.

Is Band 6 mainly a vocabulary problem?+

Often it is a control problem across vocabulary, grammar and task logic. Vocabulary errors are simply some of the easiest to diagnose and repair first.

Should I stop using advanced words?+

Stop using advanced words you cannot control. Keep less-common items that you can use accurately in more than one context.

How long does vocabulary repair take?+

Many candidates see clearer Writing and Speaking within two to four weeks if they attack repeated errors daily rather than only expanding lists.

What is the single highest-value fix?+

Collocations. Fixing verb-noun partners improves naturalness immediately in both Speaking and Writing.

What should I do after reading this?+

Run one timed mock, build your ten-error danger list, then practise the matching collocation and register guides before another full test.
