What a strong Task 1 model demonstrates

Academic Task 1 is a factual report of visual information, not an opinion essay. A strong model selects important features, gives a clear overview, groups related details, and reports data accurately. It does not explain why a trend occurred unless the visual supplies that information. Confirm Academic Task 1 on the IELTS test format (IELTS.org) and IELTS test types (IELTS.org).

Separate transferable decisions from chart-specific facts. Overview placement, grouping, comparison, unit control, and tense choice transfer. Exact figures and category names do not. Before reading the model, inspect the visual and decide what you would select. Then compare your choices with the model. This reveals whether you overlooked a dominant pattern or included minor detail. Score Task Achievement against the IELTS Writing band descriptors (IELTS.org PDF).

★ Selection is part of the task

A model should not report every number. It should show which features deserve attention and how they can be grouped into a clear summary.

Work from a concrete line graph prompt

Sample prompt: The line graph shows the percentage of commuters using cars, buses, and bicycles in a city between 2000 and 2025. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Imagine car use falls from 60 percent to 40 percent, bus use rises from 25 percent to 38 percent, and cycling increases from 15 percent to 22 percent. Cars remain the most common mode until the end, but the gap with buses narrows sharply. The overview should capture these broad movements without listing all six endpoint figures. Detail paragraphs can then supply evidence.

FeatureModel decisionReason
Overall directionCars down; buses and bicycles upThese are the dominant trends
RankingCars stay highest; buses nearly catch themThe changing gap is significant
GroupingCars separately; bus and bicycle growth togetherShared trends create logical paragraphs
Data selectionUse start, end, and a major turning pointEnough evidence without a yearly list

Build the overview before detail paragraphs

A suitable overview could state: Overall, car use declined considerably, while both public transport and cycling became more popular. Although cars remained the leading mode in 2025, their advantage over buses had become very small. This identifies directions, ranking, and the key comparison without minor figures.

Write the overview after examining the whole visual, even if it appears near the start of the final report. For charts, look for highest and lowest categories, increases and decreases, stability, convergence, and unusual peaks. For maps, identify the dominant transformation. For processes, state the number of stages and the start and end points, plus whether the process is linear or cyclical.

Data list

Weak overview

Cars were 60 percent, buses 25 percent, and bicycles 15 percent in 2000.

  • •Only one year
  • •No trend
  • •No main comparison

Main features

Effective overview

Car use fell as bus and bicycle use rose, and buses almost matched cars by the end.

  • •Covers the period
  • •Selects trends
  • •Highlights the gap

Organise details through meaningful comparisons

The first detail paragraph can report the fall in car use, including the opening level, any period of stability, and the final figure. The second can compare the two growing modes, noting that bus use increased more strongly and ended close to cars. Grouping by trend is clearer than describing 2000, then 2005, then 2010 across all categories.

Use approximate language when the visual does not support exact precision: about, roughly, just over, and nearly. Preserve units in every comparison and check whether values are percentages, numbers, money, distance, or time. Use the past tense for a completed historical period, the present for a timeless diagram, and appropriate future forms for projections. Never alter data simply to create a smoother sentence.

  • ✓Compare categories directly instead of reporting isolated figures
  • ✓Use respectively only when the order is unmistakable
  • ✓Check every copied number and unit
  • ✓Avoid cause language unless the graphic gives a cause
  • ✓Keep opinions and recommendations out of the report

Adapt the model method to every visual

A four-paragraph principle works for many tasks: introduction, overview, and two grouped detail paragraphs. The content changes by visual. A map report groups changes by area or type, such as buildings, transport, and removed features. A process report follows the sequence and uses passive forms when the actor is unimportant. A table or bar chart groups categories by similarity, rank, or movement.

Practise one visual family at a time, but include mixed charts before test day. With two visuals, find their relationship rather than writing unrelated mini-reports. A table showing population and a chart showing transport use may be linked by the same cities or years. Mention a connection only when data supports it. Your final check should cover overview, selection, figures, units, tense, and comparisons.

  1. 1InspectIdentify visual type, units, dates, categories, and wording.
  2. 2SelectChoose overview features and supporting details.
  3. 3GroupCreate detail paragraphs by trend, location, stage, or similarity.
  4. 4VerifyCheck comparisons, figures, units, overview, and tense.

Academic model answer questions students ask

Use a model in a four-step loop: predict the overview, label paragraph jobs, write a new report in 20 minutes, and rewrite the overview and weakest detail paragraph after checking.

Should the overview include numbers?+

It usually does not need detailed figures. Include a number only if essential to the main feature. Save most evidence for detail paragraphs.

Can I put the overview at the end?+

Yes, but placing it after the introduction makes the main message immediately clear. The important point is that a distinct overview is present and accurate.

How many figures should I report?+

There is no fixed number. Select enough data to prove the main trends and comparisons without describing every point.

Do maps and processes need a conclusion?+

No separate conclusion is required. They need an overview summarising the dominant change or the process from start to finish.
