IELTS Academic vs General Training 2026 - Which Module Should You Take?

IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are not difficulty levels; they are two different tests built for two different purposes. Academic checks whether you can handle scholarly reading and reporting under time pressure. General Training checks everyday and workplace English, which is what most migration authorities care about. Your Test Report Form clearly states which module you sat, and receiving institutions check this before they check your band score.

Picking the wrong module is one of the most avoidable mistakes candidates make. A visa officer or university admissions team will not accept the other module just because your overall band looks strong; if the checklist says Academic, a General Training score usually cannot be substituted, and vice versa.

Choose IELTS Academic if you are applying for undergraduate or postgraduate study at a university, or for professional registration in fields such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy or engineering where the regulator specifically names Academic IELTS. Almost all university admissions offices that accept IELTS require the Academic module, because its Reading and Writing tasks mirror the kind of dense texts and data reporting you will meet on campus.

Choose General Training if you are migrating for work or family reasons to a country such as Australia, Canada, the UK or New Zealand and the visa pathway specifically lists GT, or if you are applying to secondary education, training programmes, or work experience schemes that accept it. Listening and Speaking are identical to Academic, so do not choose a module based on the interview format; the difference lives entirely in Reading and Writing.

Reading and Writing are where the two modules genuinely diverge. Academic Reading uses three long, argument-dense texts throughout the test. General Training Reading starts with shorter, practical texts (notices, adverts, staff handbooks) and only reaches Academic-style density in the final, longer passage. Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to summarise a chart, table, map or process; General Training Writing Task 1 asks you to write a letter responding to a situation.

University applications almost always default to Academic, even in countries where General Training is common for migration. Visa and immigration applications vary far more by country and by visa stream: some skilled worker or family visas accept only General Training, while some study visas simply require whichever module your enrolled programme asked for.
