What summary completion asks you to do

A summary completion task condenses one part of the passage and removes several words or phrases. You either choose answers from a box or copy words directly from the passage. The summary follows the logic of the source but rewrites much of its language, so success depends on combining location, paraphrase and grammar fit.

The gaps usually follow passage order, which gives you a useful search boundary. Once you find the evidence for one answer, the next answer normally appears later. However, the summary may compress several sentences into one, so you must understand the relationship between ideas rather than copy the first nearby noun.

Copy exactly

Answers from the passage

Use the original spelling and obey the stated word limit.

  • •Do not change singular to plural
  • •Do not add articles
  • •Count hyphenated forms carefully

Choose and fit

Answers from a box

Select the supplied word that matches meaning and grammar.

  • •A word may be unused
  • •Some options share a topic
  • •Grammar removes many distractors

★ Read the instruction twice

NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS means three words are wrong even if their meaning is perfect. The instruction is part of every question, not decoration above the set.

Word limits and answer forms

Count only what you write in the gap, but make sure the completed sentence remains grammatical. If the summary already contains an article, copying another article can exceed the limit and create an error. Numbers are usually treated as one item, while a hyphenated compound is generally treated as one word, but the safest approach is to copy the minimum exact phrase that carries the required meaning.

  • ✓Copy passage words exactly, including plural endings.
  • ✓Never add a word simply because it appeared beside the answer in the passage.
  • ✓Recount answers containing articles, compound nouns or numbers.
  • ✓Check that the words before and after the gap do not duplicate part of your answer.

Predict grammar before searching

The words around a gap tell you which grammatical form can fit. An article such as a or the usually predicts a noun phrase. A modal verb predicts a base-form verb. A gap between an intensifier and a noun may require an adjective. This prediction lets you reject semantically tempting words that would break the sentence.

Gap contextLikely formPrediction example
a significant ____ in demandsingular countable nounrise, decline or change
was ____ by local teamspast participledesigned, collected or tested
moved more ____ through the channeladverbquickly or efficiently
several ____ were recordedplural nounchanges, species or incidents
can ____ energy usebase-form verbreduce, increase or measure

★ Grammar is a filter, not the final proof

A word can fit grammatically and still be wrong in meaning. Use grammar to narrow, then use passage evidence to decide.

Build a paraphrase bridge

Summary language is deliberately different from the passage. Look for idea pairs such as lack of rainfall and dry conditions, or became less dependent on and reduced reliance on. A strong reader maps the whole relationship, including negatives and degree, before selecting the answer.

Summary phrasePassage wordingBridge
a rapid declinefell sharplynoun phrase to verb phrase

improved accuracyproduced fewer measurement errorspositive result expressed indirectly
despite public concernalthough residents were worriedconcession structure
  • Underline contrast markers such as although, however, rather than and instead.
  • Track pronouns to the noun they replace before deciding which detail belongs in the gap.
  • Notice when the summary changes a verb into a noun, such as failed to expand becoming failure of expansion.
  • Keep qualifiers: slightly lower is not the same as dramatically lower.

Worked gap-fill example

Practice passage: Researchers tested lightweight roof panels made from compressed plant fibres. Early panels absorbed too much rainwater, so the team added a thin mineral coating. The revised design stayed dry and also reduced indoor summer temperatures by nearly three degrees, although it cost slightly more to produce.

Summary instruction: Complete the summary using NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS from the passage. The first panels were unsuitable because they took in excessive (1) ____. A (2) ____ was then applied, after which the panels remained dry and lowered temperatures inside buildings.

GapAnswerReasoning
1rainwaterExcessive paraphrases too much, and took in paraphrases absorbed. One noun fits the grammar and limit.
2mineral coatingThe article a needs a singular noun phrase. Added becomes was applied, and the exact two-word phrase fits.

★ Do not copy the whole phrase

For gap 1, too much rainwater appears in the passage, but only rainwater belongs after excessive. The summary supplies its own quantity word, so copying all three words would be both ungrammatical and over the limit.

A timed workflow and an error log

Keep four columns in your error log: my answer, correct answer, evidence, and error type. If grammar errors dominate, spend more prep time predicting forms. If location errors dominate, use the previous answer as the lower boundary for the next search. Fix the process that failed, not only the individual word.

  1. 1Box the instructionRecord the source type and maximum word count before reading the summary.
  2. 2Read the whole summaryIdentify its topic, sequence and likely location in the passage.
  3. 3Predict each gapMark N, V, ADJ or # and note singular or plural clues.
  4. 4Find the first anchorSearch for a name, technical term or strong paraphrase, then use passage order.
  5. 5Copy the minimum answerTake only the exact word or phrase needed, without changing its form.
  6. 6Read the completed summaryCheck grammar, logic, spelling and word count as one continuous text.

Practise summary completion

Complete a Reading set, then review each miss as a word-limit, grammar, location or paraphrase error.

Frequently asked questions and related practice

Can I change a passage word to fit the grammar?+

Not when answers must come from the passage. If the copied form does not fit, you probably selected the wrong word or included too much.

Do the gaps always follow passage order?+

Usually within one summary set. Still confirm the evidence, because two ideas may be compressed or contrasted in the summary.

Should I read the entire passage first?+

A quick structural skim can help, but read the summary and locate its section before doing detailed reading.

Does spelling count?+

Yes. Copy directly from the passage and perform a final letter-by-letter check for unfamiliar terms.
