What Enquiry on Results actually is

Enquiry on Results (EOR) is the official remark process for IELTS. Confirm current organiser rules via IELTS.org, British Council Take IELTS or IDP IELTS. You ask for one or more skills to be reviewed by a senior examiner who was not involved in the original marking. Writing and Speaking are re-marked against the band descriptors (IELTS Writing band descriptors (IELTS.org PDF), IELTS Speaking band descriptors (IELTS.org PDF)).

EOR is not a free second opinion chat, and it is not a guarantee of a higher score. The reviewed band can go up, stay the same, or in principle move down. Scoring background: how IELTS is scored (IELTS.org). Many candidates use EOR when they are a half band short on Writing or Speaking.

★ Remark is not a retake

EOR re-examines work you already produced. A retake or One Skill Retake creates a new performance. Choose EOR only when you think the performance was strong enough and the mark may be wrong.

  • You usually apply through the centre that ran your test, within a limited window after results.
  • You can often select specific skills rather than forcing a full four-skill remark.
  • A fee applies per enquiry; if your score for an enquired skill changes, the fee is typically refunded under official rules.
  • Processing often takes from several days up to a few weeks, depending on the centre and skills requested.

When a remark is worth considering

EOR makes the most sense when you narrowly missed a skill floor, especially in Writing or Speaking, and your prep evidence suggested you were already at or above that floor. If OSR is available for a computer-delivered sitting, compare that path on IELTS One Skill Retake (IELTS.org) before you pay for a remark.

Be honest about test-day reality. If you left Task 2 unfinished, spoke in very short Part 3 answers, or know you mismatched many Reading headings, a higher remark is unlikely. If you finished well, felt fluent, and only one subjective skill sits 0.5 below target, EOR is a reasonable option to weigh against time and fee.

Narrow miss

Lean toward EOR

One skill short by about 0.5, other skills already safe, and performance felt solid.

  • •Writing or Speaking just under the floor
  • •Timed mocks were already at target
  • •Deadline allows waiting for the remark outcome
  • •You cannot easily sit again before the cut-off

Clear gap

Lean toward retake / OSR

The low skill reflects unfinished work, weak method, or more than one failing skill.

  • •You know what went wrong and can fix it
  • •Two or more skills below target
  • •Listening/Reading errors look objective and large
  • •You still have calendar space for a new sitting

Remark vs full retake vs One Skill Retake

These three paths solve different problems. EOR reviews the old performance. A full retake creates a new four-skill TRF that every receiver understands. One Skill Retake (where available) replaces one skill after an eligible computer-delivered sitting, but some universities and visa routes still prefer or require a single-sitting result.

Never assume OSR and EOR are interchangeable. Confirm what your receiving organisation accepts before you spend the fee or the waiting time.

OptionWhat changesTypical best useMain downside
Enquiry on ResultsPossible new band on selected skills from the same sittingHalf-band miss on Writing/Speaking after a strong dayWait time; score may not rise; fee if unchanged
One Skill RetakeNew performance on one skill combined with original threeOne weak skill after computer-delivered IELTS, if eligible and acceptedNot universal; some receivers reject combined forms

How the EOR process usually works

Apply through your test centre or the organiser portal while you are still inside the enquiry window. Centres commonly allow applications for a limited period after the result date, often measured in weeks, not months. Choose the skill or skills you want reviewed, pay the fee, and keep the receipt.

During the review you generally should not assume you can also rush a new full test on the same scores. Ask the centre whether an open EOR affects printing or sending TRFs. When the enquiry finishes, you receive confirmation of any band change and, if the score changed under the rules, a fee refund pathway.

  1. 1Check the deadline and fee for your centreWindows and prices are local. Confirm before the enquiry period closes.
  2. 2Select only the skills that are closeRemarking skills that clearly failed is usually money spent without a realistic upside.
  3. 3Submit and wait for the stated processing rangePlan as if the review may take toward the longer end of the centre's estimate.
  4. 4Act on the outcome immediatelyIf the band rises, send the updated result. If not, switch to OSR or a full retake without losing more calendar time.

Fees and refunds vary by market

EOR fees differ by country. Under official practice, candidates typically receive a refund when an enquired score changes. Confirm the exact rule on your organiser's page when you apply.

Writing and Speaking remarks need a clear reason

Writing and Speaking are marked with public band descriptors, so small judgment differences can occur near band borders. That is why EOR is most often discussed for those two skills. Still, senior examiners apply the same criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy for Writing; Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation for Speaking.

A remark helps most when your script or recording would look like the higher band on those descriptors. It helps least when the performance obviously matches a lower band on task completion, fluency or accuracy.

SkillStronger EOR caseWeaker EOR case
WritingFully answered tasks, clear structure, only 0.5 below a known mock levelMissing overview, off-topic Task 2, or far below timed mock bands
SpeakingExtended answers, flexible language, single skill 0.5 shortMemorised script, very short Part 3, or multiple weak criteria
Listening / ReadingRare; usually only if you suspect a clerical issueMany wrong answers under timed conditions

A simple decision rule after results day

Use one decision pass the day scores appear. Waiting a week without choosing wastes both remark windows and retake seats.

  1. If all floors are met: submit the TRF and stop shopping for miracles.
  2. If one subjective skill is 0.5 short and mocks support the higher band: consider EOR, and calendar the wait.
  3. If one skill is weak but fixable and OSR is available plus accepted: prepare that skill and book OSR.
  4. If two or more skills failed, or the weak skill needs real training: book a full retake after a focused block of practice.
  5. If the deadline is closer than any of the above: contact the receiving organisation about extensions before you gamble.

Frequently asked questions

Can my IELTS score go down after Enquiry on Results?+

A remark can confirm a lower or unchanged band as well as a higher one. Apply only when you have a realistic case, not as a default reaction to disappointment.

Should I remark Listening or Reading?+

Less often than Writing or Speaking. Those papers are largely right-or-wrong. Consider them mainly if you suspect an administrative issue, not because you hoped for a higher conversion.

Can I apply for EOR and book a retake at the same time?+

Ask your centre. Timelines and TRF status can interact. Do not assume both paths run independently without confirmation.

Is One Skill Retake better than a remark?+

OSR creates a new skill performance; EOR reviews the old one. If you know the performance was weak, OSR or a full retake is usually better than hoping the same script is scored higher.
