IELTS in one paragraph

IELTS is an English test for people who want to study, work or live where English is used. It began in 1980 as ELTS and became IELTS when the international partnership formed in 1989. Today it is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment (About IELTS), and it is trusted by universities, employers and governments worldwide.

Unlike a pass or fail exam, IELTS gives you a score for each skill and an overall band. Each organisation decides the score it needs, so the same result can be enough for one course and too low for another.

People take IELTS for three broad reasons: to start a university course taught in English, to meet a visa or migration requirement, or to register with a professional body such as a nursing or medical council. The reason decides which test type you book and which score you aim for, so start there rather than with study materials.

The IELTS test types

Choosing the right type is the first decision. Listening and Speaking are the same in Academic and General Training; Reading and Writing differ (IELTS test types).

Test typeTypical use
IELTS AcademicUniversity and higher education, professional registration
IELTS General TrainingMigration to countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK, work experience, below-degree study
IELTS for UKVIAcademic or General Training taken under UK visa (SELT) conditions
IELTS for UKVI Life SkillsSpeaking and Listening only, for certain UK family and settlement routes

If you are unsure, ask the organisation directly which test type it accepts. Booking the wrong type is one of the most common and expensive beginner mistakes. Our Academic vs General Training guide explains the differences in detail.

Listening and Reading

Objective questions such as multiple choice, matching and completion. Each correct answer earns one mark.

  • •Listening: 30 minutes
  • •Reading: 60 minutes
  • •Raw score converts to a band

Writing and Speaking

Certified examiners mark your performance against public band descriptors.

  • •Writing: Task 1 and Task 2 in 60 minutes
  • •Speaking: 3 parts, 11-14 minutes
  • •Speaking is a live conversation

Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting without breaks. Speaking may be on the same day or up to 7 days before or after, depending on the centre. For full timings and question types, see the IELTS exam format guide.

Who accepts IELTS

IELTS results are used by universities, employers, professional bodies and immigration authorities in many countries, including the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the United States. Government routes publish their own rules, for example UKVI's SELT guidance, Australia's English requirements and Canada's language test rules.

Acceptance always depends on the exact test type. A university may accept IELTS Online while a visa route does not, and a migration program may require General Training rather than Academic. Read the requirement page of the organisation itself, then check our score requirements by country guide for typical ranges.

How IELTS is scored

You receive a band from 0 to 9 for each skill, in whole or half bands, and an overall band that is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band (how IELTS is scored). Many universities ask for an overall 6.0 to 7.0, often with a minimum in each skill. Our band score chart shows the rounding rule with examples.

There is no pass mark

IELTS has no pass or fail. Your target is whatever your university, employer or visa route requires, so check that number before you plan your study time.

How you take the test in 2026

Most candidates now take computer-delivered IELTS at a test centre, with results usually in a few days. IELTS partners are phasing out fully paper-based sittings from mid-2026, with timelines varying by market, and some markets offer a Writing on Paper option. Read computer vs paper IELTS for the details.

IELTS Online, taken at home, exists for the Academic test in some countries but is not accepted for immigration. See IELTS Online vs test centre before choosing it.

  1. Confirm the test type and minimum scores you need.
  2. Book with the British Council or IDP. The test and score are identical with either.
  3. Prepare with timed practice in all four skills.
  4. Receive your Test Report Form and send it to your organisations within 2 years.

Start with a free mock

The quickest way to understand IELTS is to try it under real timing. A full mock shows you your starting band and the gap to your target.
