IELTS Speaking Fillers and Hesitation Control

How to use natural fillers, avoid damaging silence, and keep Fluency moving when you need a second to think in IELTS Speaking.

Not all fillers are equal

Natural speech includes short planning time. Examiners expect some hesitation. Problems start when silence stretches, when um / uh repeats in every clause, or when you restart answers from the beginning after every small slip.

Useful fillers buy one beat without sounding empty: "That's a good question", "Let me think", "In my case…", "It depends…". Empty fillers stack: "um, like, you know, basically…" with no content after them.

Avoid

Damaging pattern

Long silence → um um um → restart the whole sentence.

  • •Breaks coherence
  • •Wastes time
  • •Raises anxiety

Use

Controlled pattern

Short planning phrase → direct answer → reason.

  • •Keeps rhythm
  • •Shows awareness
  • •Easy to practise

A three-second recovery drill

When you blank, follow a fixed micro-routine so you do not freeze: acknowledge, answer simply, then extend. Practise it until it is automatic.

  1. 1Acknowledge (0–1 s)Say a short planning line: "Let me think for a second" or "It depends a bit."
  2. 2Answer simply (1–2 s)Give a plain stance even if it is not elegant: "I usually prefer mornings."
  3. 3Extend once (2–3 s+)Add because / for example / these days. Stop when the idea is complete.

★ Repair beats restart

A quick correction ("he go — he goes") barely costs Fluency. Restarting the whole answer after every slip does.

  • ✓Record one Part 1 set and mark pauses longer than one second
  • ✓Replace stacked um with one planning phrase + content
  • ✓Practise paraphrasing when a word disappears mid-sentence
  • ✓Keep eye contact / posture steady while you plan — panic rises when you look lost

Part 2 and Part 3 hesitation

In Part 2, hesitation often comes from over-writing notes. Keywords only. If you dry up mid-turn, jump to the next bullet or add a feeling / result sentence instead of stopping.

In Part 3, speculation language buys thinking time honestly: "It probably depends on the country", "I imagine younger people…". That is stronger than silence.
