IELTS Online vs Test Centre: Which Should You Take? (2026)

IELTS Online at home or at a test centre? Compare acceptance, Academic-only rules, tech setup, results speed and Speaking by video before you book.

快速解答

IELTS Online is the IELTS Academic test taken at home with remote supervision. Content, timing and scoring match test-centre IELTS, but it is Academic only and not accepted for immigration, UKVI or professional registration. If you need a visa, book a test centre.

What IELTS Online is

IELTS Online lets you take IELTS Academic from home on your own computer, with the session supervised remotely. IELTS.org states that it has the same content, format, timing and scoring as IELTS Academic at a test centre (IELTS Online). Listening takes 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes and Writing 60 minutes, and Speaking is a live video call with a certified examiner.

It is not available in every country, and it exists only for the Academic test. There is no General Training version online.

IELTS Online was introduced for students who live far from a test centre or need more flexible scheduling. You book it like any other IELTS test, through the British Council or IDP where offered, and you receive an electronic Test Report Form (eTRF) rather than a paper certificate.

Acceptance: the deciding factor

★ Not for visas or immigration

IELTS Online is not accepted for immigration, UKVI or professional registration purposes (IELTS.org). Australia's Home Affairs does not accept at-home tests for visas (competent English). The British Council's terms state that it will not refund you if you later find you needed a different test.

Many universities do accept IELTS Online for admission, but not all, and some departments differ from their university's general page. Ask the admissions office in writing before booking, and keep the reply. If there is any chance you will later need the same result for a visa, a test centre booking is the safer choice from the start.

What test day looks like at home

Before the test starts, you check in online, show your passport to the camera and scan your room so the proctor can see your desk and surroundings. Phones, notes, watches and other devices must be out of reach, and nobody else may enter the room.

Speaking usually comes first as a live video call with an examiner, followed by Listening, Reading and Writing on screen. You may take one 5-minute bathroom break between tests. If your connection drops, follow the on-screen instructions and contact support rather than restarting your computer without guidance.

Technical requirements at home

  • ✓A laptop or desktop with a single screen (not a tablet or phone).
  • ✓A working webcam, microphone and built-in or external speakers.
  • ✓A stable internet connection of at least 5 Mbps upload and download; mobile hotspots are not recommended.
  • ✓A quiet, private room where nobody will enter during the test.
  • ✓Your valid passport for identity checks.

The test runs in a secure browser with live and AI-assisted remote proctoring. Run the official system check well before test day, on the same device and network you will use. Close other apps, switch off automatic updates and ask others at home to avoid heavy streaming during your session, because a weak connection is the most common source of stress on the day.

Who should choose which

IELTS Online suits you if

You only need IELTS Academic for a university that confirms it accepts IELTS Online.

  • •No convenient test centre nearby
  • •Reliable home setup
  • •Comfortable with remote supervision

Test centre suits you if

You need IELTS for a visa, migration, registration or any General Training requirement.

  • •Faster results needed
  • •Unsure about home internet
  • •Prefer face-to-face Speaking

Practise the computer format

Both options are taken on a computer, so practise typing your Writing answers and using on-screen Reading tools under timed conditions.

If you choose IELTS Online, also rehearse Speaking over a video call with a friend or tutor. Talking to a screen feels different from a face-to-face interview, and a little practice removes most of that awkwardness.
