Why a story arc beats a bullet list

Reading the bullets in order can sound mechanical. A light narrative — who/what, when/where, what happened, why it mattered — lets you cover the same prompts while sounding coherent.

You are not writing fiction. You are organising real or plausible personal experience so the examiner hears Fluency and Coherence across two minutes.

★ Notes stay tiny

In the one-minute prep, write keywords only for each beat. Full sentences waste prep time and invite reading aloud.

A reusable note grid

Draw four boxes quickly: Setup · Detail 1 · Detail 2 · Feeling/Result. Drop one or two words in each. Glance down mid-turn; do not rewrite the card.

  1. 1Read the card onceUnderline the topic noun and check tense (past experience vs future wish).
  2. 2Fill four keyword boxesPeople, place, two concrete details, emotion or outcome.
  3. 3Mark a time checkpointAim to leave the setup by ~25 seconds so development is not rushed.
  4. 4Plan an exit lineA short reflection sentence prevents an abrupt stop if the examiner ends the turn.
  • ✓Cover every bullet at least briefly — order can flex
  • ✓Add sensory detail (sound, weather, reaction) when you run short
  • ✓If you finish early, add a second example or a contrast with now
  • ✓If you overrun one bullet, jump ahead rather than racing the clock silently

Sample shape (not a script)

Topic family: describe a helpful person. Setup names the person and context. Development gives one concrete episode. Turning point shows why help mattered. Reflection links to a lasting change.

Reuse this shape for places, objects, events and skills. Change the content slots; keep the timing discipline.

Use real experience when you can. Plausible, consistent detail is fine if you can explain it under follow-up questions.

What if I forget a bullet?+

Weave it into the reflection or jump back for one sentence. Do not stop the turn to apologise at length.
