What prediction really means in Listening

Prediction does not mean guessing the exact answer. It means narrowing the possible answers before the audio plays, so your ears are filtering for a short list of options instead of everything. A candidate who has decided that gap 7 is a plural noun connected to money will notice the right word faster than one who walks in blind. Confirm Listening on IELTS test format (IELTS.org).

You get preview time before each section, and on paper tests a short check time at the end. Use that preview as the most valuable thirty seconds of the test. Strong candidates spend it on gap analysis, not on reading every sentence for meaning. Drill with Cambridge English IELTS materials.

Predict four things for every gap

What to predictHow to decideExample gap
Word classLook at the grammar around the gap'a ___ ticket' needs an adjective or a noun used as a modifier
Answer typeNumber, name, place, date, price, or common noun'costs ___ per month' is a number or price
Singular or pluralLook for a, an, many, each, or is versus are'several ___' needs a plural
Likely paraphraseThink of other ways to say the printed words'cheap' may be heard as 'inexpensive' or 'low-cost'

★ Prediction is about the surroundings

You rarely hear the exact printed words. You hear a paraphrase of them. Predict the paraphrase of the words around the gap, and the answer is the next piece of information after it.

A 30 second preview routine

  1. 1Seconds 0 to 5: read the instructionCheck the word limit and the context line. Knowing the topic starts your vocabulary priming.
  2. 2Seconds 5 to 15: label each gapPencil a small tag by each gap, such as N for number, adj for adjective, pl for plural, or name for a proper noun.
  3. 3Seconds 15 to 25: underline anchorsUnderline the key word before each gap. Those are the words you will hear first.
  4. 4Seconds 25 to 30: read aheadLook at the next set of questions so you know where the audio will go when this part ends.

Do not try to guess full answers. If you cannot tag a gap in a few seconds, move on. Tagging is faster than thinking, and it keeps you out of the rabbit hole of guessing words.

Worked examples of gap analysis

Printed linePredictionWhat may be heard
Membership fee: £ ___ a yearNumber, price, no wordForty-five pounds annually, with a discount mentioned
Contact the ___ departmentSingular noun or name of a departmentPlease speak to the admissions team
Meetings take place on ___Day of the weekTuesdays, not Thursdays as before
Visitors are advised to bring ___ clothingAdjective, such as warm, waterproof, or comfortablePack something rainproof, it gets wet
The main cause of ___ is pollutionNoun phrase, possibly a pluralMost of the damage to coral reefs

The last two rows show the pattern. The printed words are 'warm clothing' and 'main cause', but the audio uses 'rainproof' and 'most of the damage'. Prediction prepares you for different wording. If you need practice matching these, work through the 100 paraphrase pairs.

Mistakes that make prediction backfire

  • Locking onto a guess. If you decide the answer is 'Tuesday', you may write it even when the audio corrects to 'Thursday'. Predict the type, not the word.
  • Using preview time to read every sentence in full. You lose the chance to tag later gaps.
  • Ignoring the word limit. A perfect answer of three words fails under a two-word limit.
  • Forgetting to look ahead. The audio moves to the next page and you are still looking at the previous one.
  • Predicting from general knowledge instead of the grammar. A gap is decided by the sentence, not by what you think is true.

Prediction works best with a specific question type in mind. For gap-fill forms see form and note completion, and for full-sentence gaps see sentence and short answer. Many mistakes that look like hearing problems are actually prediction problems, as in the 50 trap word lists.

Predict by question type: what to tag and what to listen for

The four-part prediction idea changes slightly with each task. A form needs different tags from a map, and a multiple choice question needs no word prediction at all. Match your preview habit to the task in front of you, and you will stop wasting seconds on the wrong kind of guessing.

Question typeWhat to tag in the previewWhat to listen forCommon trap
Form or note completionWord class, number or name, singular or pluralThe words just before the gap, in a paraphrased formA first answer that is later corrected
Sentence completionGrammar of the gap and the word limitA rephrased version of the sentence startWriting a word that fits the meaning but not the grammar
Multiple choiceUnderline the stem and the key idea of each optionWhich option is confirmed, not which one is mentionedChoosing an option because you heard its keyword
MatchingRead the list of options and note near-synonymsEach item in order, with the option's meaning, not its wordsUsing one letter twice when the instruction forbids it
Map or planFind the start point and read every labelDirection words and the order of the routeLeft and right from the wrong viewpoint

Notice that only two rows ask you to predict a word class. For the others, your preview time is better spent reading the options carefully and finding the start point. If a section has mixed task types, spend the longest preview on the task that has the most questions, then glance at the rest.

  1. 1Practise with the audio offTake a finished test, cover the audio, and tag every gap in two minutes. Write one possible paraphrase beside five of them.
  2. 2Play the section and compareAfter listening, check how many tags were right. Wrong tags tell you which grammar clues you ignored.
  3. 3Review with the transcriptUnderline where the paraphrase of the printed words occurs. This shows you how far the audio usually sits from the page.
  4. 4Repeat on a new section the next daySkill grows with variety, so use a new section from Listening practice rather than replaying the same audio.

Within two weeks of this routine, most candidates find that tagging takes under twenty seconds per page, which leaves time to read ahead. Test the habit under pressure in a full timed mock test so it holds when you are tired in Section 4.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the preview time?+

Each section starts with a short time to read the questions, around half a minute. Use it fully and keep looking ahead as the recording moves between question groups.

Should I predict for multiple choice questions?+

Yes, but differently. Underline the question stem and note what each option claims. The answer usually uses a paraphrase of one option, while the others are mentioned and rejected.

Can prediction be wrong and still help?+

Yes. Even a wrong prediction of type tells you to keep listening for the real answer, as long as you did not lock on to a specific word.

How do I practise prediction without the audio?+

Take any completed practice test, hide the audio, and tag every gap in two minutes. Then play the section and check how many tags matched. Use Listening practice for fresh material.
