Two tasks, one evidence skill

Sentence completion gives you a partially written sentence and asks you to supply the missing words. Short-answer questions ask directly who, where, when, why or how much. In both tasks, answers usually appear in question order and must respect a strict word limit. You need to predict the answer form, hear a paraphrased cue and write only what is required. Section timing is on IELTS test format (IELTS.org).

The recording may contain several relevant details around one question. Strong candidates use grammar and the question word to filter them. A where question needs a place, while a sentence ending in by ____ may need a method or person. Prediction turns general listening into targeted listening. Drill with Cambridge English IELTS practice materials.

Grammar-led

Sentence completion

The completed sentence must be grammatical and preserve the recording's meaning.

  • •Use words around the gap
  • •Check singular and plural
  • •Avoid duplicated articles

Question-led

Short answer

The question word determines the information type and answer format.

  • •Who equals person
  • •Where equals place
  • •How many equals number

★ Meaning plus form

An answer is correct only when it matches the audio, fits the sentence or question, and obeys the word limit. All three checks are required.

Word limits that decide marks

Instructions such as NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER define the maximum answer length. Write fewer words whenever the shorter phrase remains exact. Do not copy surrounding prepositions or articles if the question already supplies them. A logically correct three-word phrase still receives no mark under a two-word limit.

PromptSafe answerRisky or wrong answerCheck
Meet at ____central stationat central stationThe prompt already contains at
Fee: ____$35a fee of $35Extra words are unnecessary
Bring a ____photo IDa photo IDThe article is already supplied
How long is the tour?ninety minutesfor ninety minutesAnswer the question directly
  • ✓Box ONE WORD ONLY or the exact maximum before listening.
  • ✓Count the answer after writing it, not just during preview.
  • ✓Use digits for complex numbers when allowed because they are fast and clear.
  • ✓Never add a unit if the question already prints it after the gap.

Predict answer type and grammar

Preview time is active work. Mark likely forms above gaps: N for noun, PL for plural, # for number, P for place. For short answers, underline the question word and the subject. If the question asks where equipment is stored, a date heard nearby cannot be the answer no matter how clearly it is spoken.

  1. 1Read the instructionConfirm the word limit and whether answers must come directly from the recording.
  2. 2Underline anchorsMark names, activities, dates or unusual nouns likely to be paraphrased in the audio.
  3. 3Predict the formUse grammar and question words to expect a noun, adjective, number, place or reason.
  4. 4Imagine two paraphrasesCosts can become fee or price; starts can become gets underway or begins.
  5. 5Prepare to moveKeep the next question visible so writing one answer does not make you miss its successor.
Visible cuePredictionPossible audio
The final session focuses on ____noun or activityWe finish by practising emergency procedures
Visitors must arrive by ____timePlease be there no later than quarter past nine
Where are bags stored?placeLeave them in the lockers beside reception
Why was the trip delayed?reasonHigh winds meant the boat could not depart

Distractors, corrections and delayed answers

Sentence and short-answer tasks still contain distractors. A speaker may state an old room before giving the new one, mention the standard price before a student discount, or answer indirectly after a long explanation. Keep listening until the grammar slot and meaning are both satisfied.

PatternInvented audioAnswer logic
CorrectionIt was Room 8, but we have moved it to Room 12.Room 12 is the current answer
Number contrastAdults pay 40 dollars; students only pay 25.Use the amount for the group named in the question
Delayed answerParking is limited... The easiest option is the east car park.Wait for the recommendation
NegativeYou needn't bring boots, but gloves are essential.Essential item is gloves

★ Stay through the correction

When you hear a plausible detail, pencil it mentally rather than committing. Signals such as but, now, instead, sorry and in fact often introduce the marked answer.

Spelling, plurals and number accuracy

Spelling mistakes lose marks even when you heard the right idea. Build a personal error bank for common categories: days and months, accommodation, environment, restaurant, double letters, and place-name endings. Proper names may be spelled aloud, so write each letter immediately and use any repetition to verify it.

Plural endings matter because they carry meaning and grammar. If the prompt says several ____, a singular noun cannot fit. If the audio says three workshop rooms, writing workshop may change the answer. Numbers need equal care: thirteen and thirty, fifteen and fifty, and double zero regularly cause avoidable losses.

  • Check s endings against words such as several, each and one.
  • Separate teen and tens numbers by listening for stress and context.
  • Write names letter by letter as they are spelled, then check the whole shape.
  • Use the final check to inspect spelling, not to reconsider every answer from memory.
  • Accept British or American spelling when standard, but never invent a hybrid form.

Worked mini-set

Instruction: Answer using NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER. Invented audio: The coastal walk starts at 9:30, although your printed leaflet still says ten o'clock. Please meet beside the ticket office, not inside the cafe where last year's groups gathered. Bring water and a light jacket. Walking poles are available from the guide.

QuestionAnswerWhy
1. What time does the walk begin?9:30The leaflet time is corrected by the current spoken time.
2. Where should walkers meet?ticket officeThe cafe is identified as last year's location and rejected.
3. What clothing should participants bring?light jacketWater is not clothing, while poles are provided rather than brought.

★ Use the noun in the question

Question 3 asks for clothing, which filters out water and walking poles before word-limit checking. Prediction makes the answer easier to hear.

Practice loop and frequently asked questions

Complete sets without pausing, then review in two passes. First, check whether you heard the right information. Second, check whether your written form would receive the mark. Keep listening errors separate from spelling and word-limit errors because they require different fixes.

Can I write more words if they make the answer clearer?+

No. Extra words beyond the limit make the answer wrong. Write the shortest exact response.

Do I need capital letters?+

Capitalisation is usually not the main marking issue, but clear consistent capitals can make names easier to read.

Should I guess if I miss an answer?+

Yes. There is no penalty for a wrong guess, but guess quickly and keep pace with the recording.

Can I use a synonym instead of the word I heard?+

Use the exact word from the recording unless the task clearly allows another form. Exact copying is safer for completion tasks.
