What Matching Information tests

In Matching Information you get a list of statements such as 'a description of how the data was collected' and a passage whose paragraphs are labelled A, B, C and so on. You must write the letter of the paragraph that contains each piece of information. The skill being tested is detailed scanning: finding a specific idea that is paraphrased, not copied. Confirm Reading timing on IELTS test format (IELTS.org).

Do not confuse it with Matching Headings. Headings test the main idea of a whole paragraph. Matching Information tests a single detail that may be hidden in the middle of a paragraph whose main idea is something else. Practise with Cambridge English IELTS materials.

The order problem and how to beat it

Unlike most reading tasks, the statements are not in passage order. That means you cannot use one answer to find the next. Instead you work in two passes, and the first pass should cost you under three minutes.

  1. 1Read all statements first and mark the hardest onesStatements with specific details (a number, a named method, a contrast) are easy to locate. Abstract ones ('a reason for an unexpected result') are harder. Do the easy ones first.
  2. 2Skim the passage once and make a paragraph mapWrite 3-5 words beside each paragraph: A = history of fishing, B = decline in stocks, C = new regulations. This map tells you where to look.
  3. 3Underline the content words in a statementChoose the words that carry the idea: 'comparison', 'two regions', 'funding'. Ignore generic words such as 'information' or 'description'.
  4. 4Search by paraphrase, not by copied words'funding' may appear as 'financial support', 'grants' or 'money from the government'. Think of three alternatives before scanning.
  5. 5Confirm by reading the whole sentence and the one after itA keyword match is not an answer. The sentence must say the same thing as the statement.

Paraphrase in action

Examiners rewrite every statement so that few words match the passage. Train yourself to reverse the process by translating the statement into simpler words before you scan.

StatementWhat you actually look forPassage might say
a reference to a past failure of a similar schemean earlier project that did not work'A comparable programme in the 1990s was abandoned within two years.'
an example of an unexpected consequencesomething happened that nobody planned'Surprisingly, the ban pushed more people towards private cars.'
the reason why a method is rarely useda cause, usually after 'because', 'owing to', 'due to''Few firms adopt it, largely because of the training costs.'
a warning about future risksnegative prediction'Unless action is taken, the problem could worsen by 2040.'

★ Signal words point to the answer

Reasons hide behind 'because', 'since', 'owing to'. Contrasts hide behind 'however', 'whereas', 'in contrast'. Examples hide behind 'for instance', 'such as'. Scan for the signal word first, then check the content.

Common traps

  • Keyword magnet: the same noun appears in three paragraphs. Only one actually matches the whole statement, so test the full meaning each time.
  • Wrong paragraph, right topic: a paragraph discusses the subject but gives a different aspect (for example the cost instead of the cause).
  • Reused letters: some tasks say 'You may use any letter more than once'. If so, do not eliminate a paragraph just because you already used it.
  • Half-match: the statement has two parts ('a comparison and an explanation'). Both must appear in the paragraph.
  • Skipping the paragraph map: without it you rescan the whole text for every statement and lose five minutes.

Worked mini-example

Statement: 'an example of a company that changed its policy after public criticism'. Paragraph C mentions a retailer that 'withdrew the product following a wave of complaints online'. That is the same event in different words, so the answer is C, even though 'policy', 'company' and 'criticism' never appear.

Time plan for a 5-7 question set

StageMinutesOutput
Read statements and rank by difficulty1Easy ones marked
Skim paragraphs for the map2Short label per paragraph
Answer easy statements33-4 answers locked
Answer hard statements by elimination3Remaining answers
Quick re-check of risky ones1Final answers

That is about 10 minutes for the set. If it is taking longer, leave the hardest statement and come back after finishing the other types. For overall pacing across the three passages see Reading timing and question types. To see how many marks a missed set costs you, use the score calculator.

Drill to build speed

  1. Take any passage from Reading practice and write a one-line label for each paragraph in under two minutes.
  2. Invent three statements per paragraph (a reason, an example, a comparison) and check you can find them again quickly.
  3. Do one real Matching Information set and, for every answer, write the paraphrase pair: statement words on the left, passage words on the right.
  4. Compare with Matching Features so you learn when the task depends on names instead of ideas.

Why are Matching Information questions not in passage order?+

Because each statement points to a different paragraph, the examiners shuffle them. This is why a quick paragraph map is so useful.

Can one paragraph contain more than one answer?+

Yes. Check the instruction line: if it says you may use any letter more than once, a paragraph can be correct for two or more statements.

Should I do Matching Information before other question types?+

Many candidates leave it until last because it needs a map of the whole passage. If you have already skimmed the text, do it earlier. See Reading timing and question types.

What is the difference from Matching Headings?+

Headings test the overall purpose of a paragraph, while Matching Information tests a specific detail. Compare them in the Matching Headings guide.

How can I practise this type under exam conditions?+

Run a timed section in a mock test and note how many minutes the matching set consumed compared with the plan above.
