IELTS Writing Task 1 Vocabulary List
Essential IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 vocabulary: trend verbs, adverbs of degree, comparison phrases, overview language and process or map wording for Band 7 reports.
Build Task 1 vocabulary by function, not by chart
Academic Task 1 repeats the same jobs across line graphs, bar charts, tables and pie charts: describe change, compare size, highlight extremes and write an overview. Learning vocabulary by those functions is more efficient than separate lists for every visual type.
Map and process tasks need extra location and sequence language, but your core trend and comparison bank still does most of the work for data tasks.
- Trend verbs: what happened over time
- Degree adverbs: how fast or how much
- Comparison phrases: which was larger, closer or highest
- Overview frames: main features without listing every number
Trend verbs you can trust
Vary verbs, but keep tense consistent with the time period on the chart. Past dates usually need past simple. Forecasts may need will or is expected to.

Degree, comparison and proportion language
Degree adverbs stop every sentence sounding identical. Comparison language is essential for bar charts and tables with categories. Proportion phrases matter for pie charts and share data.

Repetitive
Weak report language
Same verb and vague comparison.
- •The number increased. Then it increased again.

Precise
Stronger report language
Varied verbs and measurable contrast.
- •The figure rose steadily, then levelled off.
- •A was significantly higher than B.
- •Cars accounted for the largest share.
Numbers, time phrases and safe quantifiers
Task 1 also needs clean ways to place figures in time and to talk about amount without inventing false precision. These frames transfer across almost every data chart.

Overview, process and map essentials
An overview needs big-picture language, not a second data dump. Process and map tasks recycle a smaller set of verbs and prepositions that you can prepare in advance.

How many Task 1 words do I need?+
A controlled bank of roughly 80-100 functional phrases covers most data tasks. Depth of accurate use matters more than memorising 300 near-synonyms.
Can I use the same verbs in every report?+
Some repetition is normal, but vary at least the main trend verbs and comparison structures so Lexical Resource does not look limited.
Should I learn different lists for bar charts and line graphs?+
Learn by function first. Add only small extensions for maps and processes.
Is soared always better than increased?+
No. Choose the verb that matches the size and speed of change on the chart.
