Why paraphrasing matters in every IELTS skill

IELTS rarely repeats a question in exactly the same words as the source. Reading and Listening questions replace words from the passage or recording with paraphrases. In Writing, flexible wording helps you restate the task and avoid repetition. In Speaking, it lets you explain an idea when the first word that comes to mind is too basic or imprecise.

A synonym is not an automatic replacement. Words that share a broad meaning can differ in strength, grammar, tone or common word partners. Learn each item with its example, then check whether it fits the sentence you want to build.

★ Meaning first, variety second

Choose the word that expresses the exact idea, not the word that sounds most advanced. Accurate, natural vocabulary is more useful than a forced thesaurus substitute.

How to use synonyms without awkward thesaurus dumps

  1. 1Group by functionStudy words in small meaning groups, such as gradual increases, sharp decreases or cautious reporting verbs. Contrast near-synonyms so you remember differences in strength.
  2. 2Record the grammarWrite whether the item is a noun, verb, adjective or phrase. Add a common pattern, such as contribute to + noun or result in + noun.
  3. 3Build one personal exampleAdapt the model sentence to a topic you often discuss. Use a full sentence, because isolated word pairs do not teach natural collocation.
  4. 4Recycle under time pressureChoose five items and use them in a short Task 2 paragraph or two-minute Speaking answer. Keep only the substitutions that sound natural in context.

★ A safe paraphrasing test

Check meaning, grammar and collocation before replacing a word. If any one of the three changes, rewrite the whole sentence instead of swapping a single item.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different synonym every time I repeat a word?+

No. Repeating a precise topic word is often clearer than replacing it with an inaccurate alternative. Vary general words when the new expression fits naturally.

Can I use these synonyms in the Reading answer box?+

Only when the instructions allow your own words. Many completion tasks require words taken directly from the passage, so always follow the stated word limit.

How many synonyms should I learn each day?+

Five to eight well-practised items are more useful than a long list read once. Review them through retrieval, sentence building and timed use.
