What the Cambridge IELTS books are
Cambridge University Press & Assessment is one of the three IELTS partners and produces the test materials (About IELTS). Its numbered practice books, from IELTS 1 to IELTS 21, contain authentic examination papers from Cambridge that show the real level and layout of the test.
Many learners call them simply "the Cambridge books" and refer to them by number, such as Cambridge 18 or Cambridge 21. Each new title usually appears once a year, so the highest number is the newest set of papers.
Because the papers are written to the same specification as the live test, these books are the closest printed practice to the real exam. This page describes what each book offers; it does not include any questions, recordings or answers from them.
Inside a recent book
- Four complete practice tests covering Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
- Audio for Listening, accessed through the digital pack.
- Answer keys with explanations and Listening transcripts in the 'with Answers' editions.
- Sample Writing answers with examiner comments.
- An example Speaking test video in the latest titles.
For IELTS 21, Cambridge lists four Academic papers, audio, answer keys with explanations, sample Writing answers and an example Speaking video, delivered with a Digital Pack on Cambridge One (Cambridge catalogue, ISBN 9781009826723 for the Academic Student's Book with Answers with Digital Pack).
Which edition: Academic, General Training, with or without answers
| Choice | Pick this if | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Academic | You need IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI Academic | Reading and Writing differ from General Training |
| General Training | You need GT for migration or work | Separate GT editions exist for recent numbers; check the cover |
| With Answers | You study alone and need explanations | Easy to peek; cover the keys while practising |
| Without Answers | A teacher marks your work | No self-checking |
Listening and Speaking are the same for both test types, so either edition helps with those. Buy the type that matches your Reading and Writing test. Check the cover and the publisher listing carefully, because Academic and General Training editions of the same number look very similar.
Which numbers to use first
Start with the newest one or two books, such as IELTS 21 and IELTS 20, because they best reflect current topics, task wording and the computer-delivered era. Keep one complete test unused for a final full rehearsal a week or two before your exam.
A realistic plan for most learners is two or three recent books, which give you up to 12 full tests. Spread them across your preparation: one early test as a diagnostic, most in the middle alongside skill practice, and one or two at the end as rehearsals under exam conditions.
Older books are still useful for volume practice, especially Reading and Listening question types, which have stayed stable. If you are new to IELTS, The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS (new edition, May 2025) teaches each skill before you move on to full papers.
How to get the most from each test
- 1Sit it under real timingDo Listening, Reading and Writing in one session without pausing audio. On computer-delivered IELTS you type, so consider typing your Writing practice.
- 2Mark with the band score chartConvert your raw Listening and Reading marks to bands and note the gap to your target.
- 3Analyse every mistakeLabel each error: vocabulary, distractor, spelling, time or question type. Patterns matter more than scores.
- 4Get feedback on Writing and SpeakingCompare your work with the sample answers, then use a checker or teacher for an independent view.
Add computer-style practice
Books are paper based, but most candidates now sit the test on computer. Mix book practice with timed on-screen mocks so the interface does not surprise you.
Keep a simple log of every full test: date, raw scores, bands and the three most common error types. After four or five tests the log tells you more about what to study next than any single score.
FAQ
Which Cambridge IELTS book is the latest?+
IELTS 21 Practice Tests, published by Cambridge University Press & Assessment in July 2026.
Are Cambridge IELTS books harder than the real test?+
They are produced by Cambridge to the same specification as the real test, so they are a good guide to the real level.
Do I need every Cambridge IELTS book?+
No. Two or three recent books give you up to 12 full tests, which is enough for most study plans when combined with targeted skill practice.
