What "free" really means for IELTS practice

Free IELTS practice comes in three very different forms: genuinely free tools, free samples that lead to a paid product, and free tips with no practice at all. Mixing them up is how people spend a month on blog posts and then discover they have never finished a timed paper.

Daily English Pro offers free mock tests, free section practice and a free Guides library, with paid plans for deeper packs. You can compare what sits in each tier on pricing. Other sites below follow different models, so we label each one.

Verify before you pay

Third-party sites change often. Check pricing, features and booking rules on the live pages before you decide. Daily English Pro is independent of IELTS.org, the British Council, IDP and Cambridge. We publish this review, so we have an interest in our own tools. Read the criteria and judge for yourself.

Free timed practice: Daily English Pro

The main value of free practice is repetition under time pressure. Daily English Pro's Reading practice and Listening practice let you drill one section without committing three hours. The mock tests cover a full sitting when you are ready.

  • Good fit: learners who need timer rehearsal and error logs, not just explanations
  • Good fit: Reading and Listening, where answers can be marked instantly
  • Weaker fit: anyone who needs a live person to answer questions
  • Free Writing Checker access helps with revision, but check the current free limit

Free lessons: IELTS Liz

IELTS Liz is one of the better free libraries of strategy content. Lessons are organised by skill and question type, which makes it easy to fix one problem at a time, such as matching headings or Part 2 structure.

The tradeoff is format. It is a blog-style site, so you will not get a computer-based simulator or automatic marking across a full paper. Use it to learn a method, then test that method on a timed platform. Our Reading guides and Listening guides play the same role on Daily English Pro.

Free official material

The British Council publishes preparation pages and public band descriptors, and often links sample questions. Treat them as the authority on what examiners reward.

IDP offers similar information in its markets, plus offers for paid prep. Free samples are useful for format familiarity. They rarely give you enough papers for a full study plan, so plan for another source of volume.

★ Free samples are a warm-up, not a plan

Two or three official sample papers will show you the format. A band improvement usually needs weekly timed practice for several weeks. Budget your free sources for that volume.

Free vs paid: when to upgrade

Free

Stay free if

You are early in preparation or only polishing one section.

  • •You are still learning question types
  • •You can finish a mock or two per month
  • •You have a teacher for Writing and Speaking

Paid

Consider paid if

You have a test date within weeks and need volume or feedback.

  • •You run out of fresh timed papers
  • •You need repeated Writing feedback
  • •You want one account for all four skills

Upgrade only when a clear bottleneck appears. Review pricing against your timeline, and check refund terms yourself on any platform.

A free weekly routine

  1. 1Monday: learn one methodRead one lesson on your weakest question type from a tip site or a Daily English Pro guide.
  2. 2Tuesday to Thursday: short timed drillsDo two section practice sets and write down every wrong answer with the reason.
  3. 3Friday: one Writing draftWrite a Task 2 essay and run it through the Writing Checker. Rewrite once.
  4. 4Weekend: one timed paperSit a mock test or a single full section. Compare with last week.

Criteria checklist for free sites

Free is only useful when it creates a repeatable habit. Use this checklist before you bookmark another tip blog.

  • ✓At least one timed Listening or Reading set you can finish this week
  • ✓Answer review that teaches evidence, not only right or wrong
  • ✓Clear label of what is free forever versus a trial teaser
  • ✓Strategy pages that map to real question types
  • ✓No claim of leaked official papers
  • ✓A path from lesson to timed drill in the same week

Mistakes with free IELTS practice

  • Watching tip videos all week and never finishing a timed paper
  • Downloading random PDFs with no answer key
  • Assuming every free mock matches computer-based delivery
  • Using five free sites and reviewing none of them deeply
  • Ignoring Writing and Speaking because free marking feels weaker
  • Upgrading only because a free trial ended, not because a bottleneck appeared

Protect a weekly timed checkpoint. If a free stack cannot support that, it is entertainment, not preparation.

How to combine free sources with Daily English Pro

Keep free tip sites for method, official samples for format trust, and Daily English Pro for timed mock tests plus section practice. The Writing Checker covers free Writing loops within current limits on pricing.

  1. 1Learn freeRead one lesson on IELTS Liz or a Daily English Pro guide.
  2. 2Drill timedComplete the matching skill in practice mode the same day.
  3. 3CheckpointSit one free mock section or full paper each weekend.
  4. 4Upgrade only for volumePay when you run out of fresh papers or need more Writing feedback cycles.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a completely free full IELTS mock test?+

Several platforms offer free papers or sections, including Daily English Pro. Availability and limits change, so check the live page for what is unlocked today.

Are free practice tests accurate to the real exam?+

Quality varies. Prefer papers with realistic timing, question styles and answer explanations. Official samples are accurate but few in number.

Can I get free Writing feedback?+

Yes, from tools and some communities. The Writing Checker is one option. Free feedback is a draft reviewer, not an official band, so cross-check with public descriptors.

Why not just use YouTube and blogs?+

They teach methods well but rarely enforce timing or marking. Combine them with a timed platform.
