IELTS Writing Task 2 Tips and Structure

Task 2 asks for an essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and it typically contributes more to your overall Writing band than Task 1. If time runs short in the real exam, protect Task 2 quality first and finish Task 1 as cleanly as you can rather than the reverse.

You manage your own time in the Writing test. The essay is formal for both Academic and General Training. Every Task 2 prompt wants a clear position developed with reasons and examples, not a list of loosely connected points. Examiners mark four criteria at once, so a strong essay needs balanced strength across all of them rather than one standout feature and three weak ones.

Task Response rewards a position that is clear from the introduction and held consistently to the conclusion, with ideas developed rather than merely listed. Coherence and Cohesion rewards logical paragraphing, one controlling idea per paragraph, and referencing that does not feel forced. Lexical Resource rewards precise, natural topic vocabulary over rare idioms used incorrectly. Grammatical Range and Accuracy rewards a mix of sentence structures that stays accurate enough not to block meaning.

Task 2 prompts fall into a small number of families, and misreading the type is one of the fastest ways to lose Task Response marks. Opinion essays want a stated side kept consistent throughout. Discussion essays want both views covered fairly, plus your own opinion if the prompt asks for one. Problem-solution essays want realistic causes and solutions that connect directly to the stated problem, not a generic list. Advantage-disadvantage and two-part questions each have their own expectation for how fully you must answer every element.

Point, explain, example, link back to the question, known as PEEL, gives each body paragraph one controlling idea instead of a scattered list. Two well-developed body paragraphs are usually enough; three thin paragraphs rarely score higher than two fully developed ones. Introductions paraphrase the question and state your position; conclusions restate that position in new words without introducing anything new.

The most common band ceilings are an unclear or shifting position, ideas that are named but never explained, repeated vocabulary, and grammar errors dense enough to block meaning. Overusing rare idioms to sound advanced often backfires, since an idiom used slightly wrong reads worse than a plain, accurate sentence. A flexible frame can help with structure, but pasting fixed sentences that do not answer the actual prompt is penalised under Task Response.

Writing a fresh essay every day without feedback tends to repeat the same habits rather than fix them. A tighter loop works better: write one timed Task 2 essay, get criterion-based feedback, rewrite the same essay once, then move to a new prompt.
