Understand what bullet points require

A General Training Task 1 prompt gives a situation and three bullet points. Those bullets are the content requirements of the letter. Task Achievement depends on covering all of them clearly and sufficiently. Mentioning a bullet in one vague phrase is not always enough. The reader needs the information, explanation or action requested by the exact verb. Confirm GT letters on the IELTS test types (IELTS.org).

Underline the instruction in each bullet. Explain why you are unhappy requires reasons or effects. Describe what happened requires concrete events. Say what you would like the manager to do requires a specific request. If you answer a related question instead, the letter may sound fluent but remain incomplete. Number the bullets in your plan so none disappears under time pressure. Official Task Achievement wording: IELTS Writing band descriptors (IELTS.org PDF).

★ Three content promises

Treat each bullet as a promise to the reader. Complete every requested action, not just the general topic.

Bullet verbWhat to includeUseful check
DescribeSpecific people, event, place or conditionCould the reader picture what happened?
ExplainReason, cause or effectHave you answered why or how?
SuggestPractical proposal with enough detailCould the reader act on it?
RequestClear desired action and suitable timingIs the outcome specific?
InviteEvent details plus a direct invitationDoes the reader know when and where?

Plan one clear paragraph per bullet

A reliable structure is greeting, short purpose paragraph, one paragraph for each bullet and an appropriate closing. The opening purpose line establishes why you are writing, but it does not replace the first bullet unless it provides enough requested detail. One paragraph per bullet makes coverage easy to see and prevents two requirements from becoming mixed.

Spend about three minutes planning. Beside each bullet, note two pieces of content. For a letter about a missed training course, the first bullet might contain date and reason for absence. The second might contain the modules missed and why they matter. The third might request materials and a short meeting. These notes produce natural expansion without unrelated storytelling.

  1. 1Identify the readerDecide formal, semi-formal or informal tone.
  2. 2Write the purposeState why the letter is being sent.
  3. 3Add two notes per bulletGive each requirement enough specific content.
  4. 4Choose the request or closeEnd with an action that fits the situation.

Expand bullets without going off topic

Useful expansion comes from reason, detail, result or next step. Suppose a bullet says explain why you were dissatisfied with a hotel room. You could identify persistent noise from building work, state that it continued after midnight and explain that your family could not sleep before an early flight. Every sentence develops dissatisfaction. A long description of the holiday destination would not.

Specific does not mean complicated. Names, realistic times and practical details make the situation clear, but invented facts should remain consistent. If you say the event happened last Monday, do not later call it a weekend problem. Avoid memorised complaints that could be inserted into any letter. Content should respond to the particular reader and situation.

Weak

Thin coverage

The room was bad and I was unhappy. Please help.

  • •No concrete problem
  • •Effect unexplained
  • •Request vague

Strong

Developed coverage

Building noise continued until after midnight, so my family was unable to rest before our 6 a.m. flight.

  • •Specific detail
  • •Clear effect
  • •Situation remains relevant

Match tone across every bullet

Tone depends mainly on your relationship with the reader and the purpose. A manager or unknown organisation usually requires formal language. A colleague or neighbour may need semi-formal language. A close friend can receive informal language. The situation alone does not decide tone: a complaint to a friend is still personal, while an invitation to a senior manager may remain formal.

Keep tone consistent as you move through the bullets. A formal letter can use I would appreciate it if you could..., while an informal letter may use Could you...? Avoid contractions in a strongly formal complaint if you are not confident about register. Also avoid aggressive threats. Firm requests can remain polite: I would therefore like to request a full refund within ten working days.

PurposeFormal or semi-formalInformal
Give newsI am writing to let you know that...Just wanted to tell you that...
RequestI would be grateful if you could...Could you...?
ApologisePlease accept my apologies for...I'm really sorry about...
SuggestOne possible solution would be to...Why don't we...?
CloseI look forward to your response.Hope to hear from you soon.

Avoid missing and uneven coverage

Candidates often spend too long on the first bullet and rush the final request. A simple planning balance prevents this. Aim for a similar amount of purposeful development for each bullet, although exact equality is unnecessary. The bullet requiring explanation may naturally need more sentences than the bullet asking for a date.

Another mistake is hiding a bullet inside the wrong paragraph. Clear paragraphing helps the reader and the examiner. Check pronouns and references as well. If the letter mentions two events, phrases such as this issue may become ambiguous. Name the problem again when necessary. Finally, do not copy bullet wording as a heading or list. Write a connected letter with complete sentences.

  • ✓All three bullet verbs are answered
  • ✓Each bullet has at least one supporting detail
  • ✓Paragraph boundaries make coverage easy to follow
  • ✓Tone remains suitable for the same reader
  • ✓The requested action is specific and realistic
  • ✓The closing matches the greeting and relationship

Practise bullet coverage in twenty minutes

Start with planning drills. Take five prompts and spend three minutes on each identifying reader, purpose, tone and two notes per bullet. Then write one complete letter in twenty minutes: three minutes to plan, fourteen minutes to write and three minutes to check. Number the bullets on your question paper and tick them only after finding the relevant sentences in your response.

During review, use three colours, one for each bullet. Highlight every sentence according to its function. A missing colour shows incomplete coverage, while a long block of one colour may show imbalance. Check that each highlighted group answers the exact verb. Rewrite the weakest paragraph, then practise a different letter type so the method transfers beyond complaints or requests.

Must each bullet have its own paragraph?+

It is not an official rule, but one paragraph per bullet is a clear and reliable structure for most letters.

How many sentences should cover one bullet?+

There is no fixed number. Usually two or three purposeful sentences can provide the requested point and enough detail.

Can I change the order of the bullet points?+

Yes, if the new order is logical and every requirement remains easy to identify. Following the given order is often safest.

Do I write actual bullet points in my answer?+

No. Write a connected letter with paragraphs and complete sentences.
