Writing Task 2 test information

Task 2 asks for an essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes, and it typically contributes more to your overall Writing band than Task 1. If time runs short in the real exam, protect Task 2 quality first and finish Task 1 as cleanly as you can rather than the reverse.

You manage your own time in the Writing test. The essay is formal for both Academic and General Training. Every Task 2 prompt wants a clear position developed with reasons and examples, not a list of loosely connected points. Examiners mark four criteria at once, so a strong essay needs balanced strength across all of them rather than one standout feature and three weak ones.

★ Position first

Decide your clear position in the first 3 minutes. Essays that drift mid-way often lose Task Response marks even with good grammar.

Protect Task 2 first

If you are running behind on exam day, finish Task 2 with a full conclusion before returning to polish Task 1. An unfinished Task 2 costs more than a slightly shorter Task 1.

The four scoring criteria: TR, CC, LR and GRA

Task Response rewards a position that is clear from the introduction and held consistently to the conclusion, with ideas developed rather than merely listed. Coherence and Cohesion rewards logical paragraphing, one controlling idea per paragraph, and referencing that does not feel forced. Lexical Resource rewards precise, natural topic vocabulary over rare idioms used incorrectly. Grammatical Range and Accuracy rewards a mix of sentence structures that stays accurate enough not to block meaning.

CriterionWhat it rewardsWhat it penalises
Task ResponseClear position, fully developed ideas, all parts answeredOff-topic content, thin or repeated ideas
Coherence & CohesionLogical paragraphing, natural linkingFormulaic connectors, unclear referencing
Lexical ResourcePrecise, flexible vocabularyRepetition, misused rare words
Grammatical Range & AccuracyVaried, accurate complex sentencesErrors that obscure meaning

Choosing the right essay type: opinion, discussion, problem-solution

Task 2 prompts fall into a small number of families, and misreading the type is one of the fastest ways to lose Task Response marks. Opinion essays want a stated side kept consistent throughout. Discussion essays want both views covered fairly, plus your own opinion if the prompt asks for one. Problem-solution essays want realistic causes and solutions that connect directly to the stated problem, not a generic list. Advantage-disadvantage and two-part questions each have their own expectation for how fully you must answer every element.

Essay typeWhat examiners expect
OpinionClear side plus reasons, held consistently to the end
DiscussionBoth views covered; state your own view only if asked
Problem-solutionCauses and solutions that connect directly to the stated problem
Advantages / disadvantagesBalanced development; weigh both sides if the prompt asks
Two-part questionAnswer both questions fully, in the order asked

A reliable paragraph pattern

Point, explain, example, link back to the question, known as PEEL, gives each body paragraph one controlling idea instead of a scattered list. Two well-developed body paragraphs are usually enough; three thin paragraphs rarely score higher than two fully developed ones. Introductions paraphrase the question and state your position; conclusions restate that position in new words without introducing anything new.

  1. 1Plan (3-5 min)Underline the task words, decide your position, and note two paragraph ideas.
  2. 2Write (30-32 min)Introduction, two PEEL body paragraphs, short conclusion, aiming for 270-320 words.
  3. 3Check (2-3 min)Fix subject-verb agreement, articles, and any sentence that blurs your position.
  • ✓Paraphrase the question in the introduction rather than copying it
  • ✓One controlling idea per body paragraph
  • ✓General examples are fine if they stay directly relevant
  • ✓Conclusion restates the position; it does not add a new argument

What lowers your band

The most common band ceilings are an unclear or shifting position, ideas that are named but never explained, repeated vocabulary, and grammar errors dense enough to block meaning. Overusing rare idioms to sound advanced often backfires, since an idiom used slightly wrong reads worse than a plain, accurate sentence. A flexible frame can help with structure, but pasting fixed sentences that do not answer the actual prompt is penalised under Task Response.

Uneven

Band 6 pattern

Position exists but ideas stay thin; some repetition; errors sometimes hide meaning.

  • •Lists points
  • •Weak examples
  • •Formulaic phrases

Controlled

Band 7 pattern

Clear position, developed PEEL bodies, flexible vocabulary, mostly accurate complex grammar.

  • •Addresses all parts
  • •Natural linking
  • •Few meaning-blocking errors

Practice loop: Writing Checker and this week's prompts

Writing a fresh essay every day without feedback tends to repeat the same habits rather than fix them. A tighter loop works better: write one timed Task 2 essay, get criterion-based feedback, rewrite the same essay once, then move to a new prompt. This week's Writing Task 2 topics guide gives fresh prompts across the essay types above so you are not always practising the same theme.

Is a memorised template enough for band 7?+

A template can help with structure, but examiners penalise irrelevance and unnatural wording. Treat any frame as a flexible skeleton and adapt it fully to the exact prompt.

Should I write more than 300 words?+

Only if the extra length stays controlled. Adding new, undeveloped points late in the essay often lowers Coherence rather than raising Task Response.

Can I use personal examples?+

Yes, if they directly answer the question. Keep them brief and general enough to support an academic-style argument rather than turning into a personal story.
