What linking words really do in IELTS

Linking words show a logical relationship: addition, contrast, cause, result, example, concession, or sequence. They help readers follow reasoning, but they cannot repair weak reasoning. Coherence and Cohesion also depends on paragraph order, topic sentences, referencing, and progression from one sentence to the next.

A strong answer does not begin every sentence with a connector. It uses explicit linking where the relationship might otherwise be unclear. Elsewhere, repeated key nouns, pronouns such as this and these, and well-ordered information create quieter cohesion. Aim for control, not quantity. If removing a connector leaves the meaning equally clear, the word may be decorative rather than useful.

★ Meaning comes before variety

Choose a linker because its logical meaning is exact, not because it sounds advanced. However marks contrast, therefore marks a result, and for example introduces evidence.

Choose connectors by their exact function

Learn a small, dependable group for each function and practise every phrase in a complete sentence. Several expressions look interchangeable but differ in grammar or emphasis. Such as normally introduces examples inside a noun phrase, while for example can introduce a whole sentence. On the other hand presents an alternative side, while however marks a broader contrast.

Do not replace simple words automatically. Also is often more natural than furthermore inside a sentence. Because clearly expresses a cause and is fully suitable for academic writing. Variety matters only when the alternatives remain accurate.

FunctionReliable choicesExample
Additionalso, in addition, furthermoreThe policy saves money. In addition, it reduces waste.
Contrasthowever, whereas, while, in contrastCar use rose, whereas bus use declined.
Causebecause, since, due toDemand increased because fares were reduced.
Resulttherefore, consequently, as a resultThe route closed; consequently, journeys took longer.
Examplefor example, for instance, such asPreventive measures, such as vaccination, reduce costs.
Concessionalthough, even though, despiteAlthough the scheme is costly, its benefits are substantial.

Control grammar and punctuation around connectors

Connector errors are often sentence errors. However is a sentence adverb: Public transport is convenient. However, it is not available everywhere. You can also place a semicolon before it: Public transport is convenient; however, coverage remains limited. Do not join two complete sentences with only a comma before however.

Although is a conjunction and introduces a dependent clause: Although buses are affordable, they can be slow. Despite is a preposition and needs a noun phrase or gerund: Despite their low cost, buses can be slow. Because introduces a clause, while because of and due to introduce noun phrases. Therefore and as a result express a genuine consequence, not merely a second opinion.

Although

Clause pattern

Although online courses are flexible, some learners need direct support.

  • •Although + subject + verb
  • •Comma after an opening dependent clause

Despite

Noun phrase pattern

Despite the flexibility of online courses, some learners need direct support.

  • •Despite + noun phrase
  • •Same contrast, different grammar

Create cohesion inside a body paragraph

Start with the main claim, not a decorative sequence marker. Then develop the claim through explanation, consequence, and example. For instance: Flexible schedules improve employee retention. Workers can arrange appointments without taking a full day off. As a result, they are less likely to leave for an employer offering better balance. This progression is clear even though only one explicit connector appears.

Use referencing carefully. This, these, and such need an obvious noun or idea. After writing Companies can reduce office space, the phrase this saving is clearer than this alone. Synonyms also connect sentences, but inaccurate substitution creates confusion. Repeating a precise key term is better than forcing an unnatural alternative. Pronouns must agree with the noun they replace.

  1. 1StateOpen with one clear controlling idea.
  2. 2ExplainShow why the claim is true or how the process works.
  3. 3ExtendAdd a consequence, contrast, or relevant example.
  4. 4ConnectUse a linker only where it makes that relationship clearer.

Adapt linking for Task 1 and Task 2

Task 1 needs comparison and sequence more often than argument. For charts, use while, whereas, compared with, respectively, and by contrast to group meaningful features. Do not write firstly, secondly, and thirdly for every number. For processes, sequencing language such as initially, after this, once, and finally helps readers track stages. Maps benefit from location language and clear before-and-after grouping.

Task 2 needs relationships between claims. Addition, contrast, cause, concession, and result are especially useful. A common mistake is using therefore when the second sentence is another opinion rather than a logical result. During review, name the relationship between each pair of sentences. If you cannot name it, improve the reasoning before replacing the linker.

  • ✓Highlight every explicit connector in one completed answer
  • ✓Label its function in the margin
  • ✓Check the grammar and punctuation that follow it
  • ✓Remove repeated markers when paragraph order is already clear
  • ✓Replace vague this with this + a precise noun where needed

Linking word questions students often ask

Build control through editing rather than memorising a page of expressions. Rewrite one paragraph three ways: first with explicit connectors, then with fewer connectors, then with improved referencing. Keep the clearest version.

How many linking words should I use?+

There is no target number. Use enough to make relationships clear without making the writing mechanical. If almost every sentence begins with one, you are probably overusing them.

Can I use firstly and secondly?+

Yes, when they organise parallel points. They are not required, and clear topic sentences often organise body paragraphs more naturally.

Is moreover better than also?+

No. Moreover is more emphatic, while also fits naturally in many sentences. Precision and placement matter more than formality.

Should I avoid repeating words?+

Avoid clumsy repetition, but repeat essential terms when no precise synonym exists. Forced synonyms can change meaning and weaken cohesion.
