Why word families multiply your range

A word family is a root meaning expressed in different forms: economy, economic, economise, economically. Learning families is one of the highest-return IELTS vocabulary methods because one root unlocks several accurate options for paraphrasing and sentence building.

Examiners notice when candidates can shift forms cleanly. They also notice when someone forces the wrong form: economic growth is fine, but The country became more economy is not.

★ One root, four usable forms

For each new academic word, record noun / verb / adjective / adverb where they exist, plus one collocation. That single card supports Writing and Speaking for weeks.

Core families for Task 2 and Part 3

These families appear across education, environment, technology, work and society prompts. Learn them as sets, then practise switching forms inside one idea.

About the blanks

Not every family has all four forms in common use. Do not invent forms. If the adverb is rare, use a phrase instead: in an innovative way.

More high-yield families by theme

Once the core set feels automatic, add theme families that appear in both Task 2 and Speaking Part 3. Keep the same card format so revision stays fast.

ThemeFamily setReady-made line
Technologyinnovate / innovation / innovativeInnovative tools can reduce paperwork, but innovation without training wastes money.
Healthprevent / prevention / preventivePrevention is cheaper than treatment, so preventive care deserves priority funding.
Crimeoffend / offence / offenderYoung offenders often need education programmes rather than only punishment.
Citiesreside / resident / residentialResidential areas near airports often demand stricter noise controls.
Mediainform / information / informative / misinformationInformative reporting matters more when misinformation spreads quickly online.
Workemploy / employer / employee / employment / unemploymentEmployers that invest in employees can reduce unemployment in local communities.
Environmentsustain / sustainability / sustainableSustainable transport policies help cities sustain growth without choking traffic.
Educationassess / assessment / assessedContinuous assessment can reduce exam stress if teachers assess progress fairly.

How form shifts create better sentences

Word families help you paraphrase without hunting for a risky synonym. You keep the meaning and change the grammar. That is especially useful in Writing introductions and Speaking Part 3 when you need to restate an idea cleanly.

Base ideaForm switchResult
Technology has developed quickly.noun focusThe rapid development of technology has changed workplaces.
This policy benefits workers.adjective focusThis policy is beneficial for workers on low incomes.
The difference is significant.adverb focusCosts differ significantly between the two cities.
Parents should educate children about media.noun focusMedia education should start at an early age.
Companies must invest more.noun focusGreater investment in training could raise productivity.

Riskier

Synonym-only paraphrase

Replace every word with a thesaurus option.

  • •Meaning drift
  • •Wrong collocation
  • •Unnatural tone

Safer

Family + structure paraphrase

Keep the idea, change form and sentence shape.

  • •Meaning stays stable
  • •Grammar practice included
  • •Sounds more controlled

Common form errors that waste the family method

Families only help when the form matches the grammar slot. These swaps are frequent in Band 6 scripts and are easy to drill once you know them.

Wrong formCorrect formQuick rule
economical growtheconomic growtheconomic = related to the economy; economical = money-saving
I am interesting in artI am interested in artinterested = your feeling; interesting = the thing
responsible to the taskresponsible for the taskresponsible for a duty; responsible to a person
affect on childreneffect on children / affect childrenaffect is usually the verb; effect is usually the noun
an adviceadvice / a piece of adviceadvice is uncountable
informations / furnituresinformation / furnituremany academic nouns stay uncountable
depend ofdepend onfixed preposition
discuss about the issuediscuss the issuediscuss does not need about

A weekly word-family study loop

Families become useful only when you can retrieve them while speaking and writing. Use a short loop that forces production across both skills.

  1. 1Select five rootsChoose from this page or from a Task 2 topic you will practise this week.
  2. 2Build the family cardWrite all common forms, one collocation and one Speaking example.
  3. 3Write four sentencesOne sentence per available form, all on the same topic.
  4. 4Speak for one minuteAnswer a Part 3 question and deliberately use at least two forms from one family.
  5. 5Review errors onlyCircle wrong forms such as economical growth or responsible on someone.
  • ✓economic growth, not economical growth (economical usually means money-saving)
  • ✓interested in, not interesting in when describing your feeling
  • ✓responsible for a task; responsible to a manager
  • ✓affect (verb) vs effect (usually noun)
  • ✓advise (verb) vs advice (noun)

How many word families do I need for Band 7?+

There is no magic number. A practical target is deep control of several dozen high-frequency academic families plus topic banks, not shallow recognition of hundreds.

Is learning word families enough by itself?+

No. You still need collocations and topic vocabulary. Families make your existing vocabulary more flexible.

Should I learn every possible form?+

Learn the forms you will actually use. Rare or awkward forms create errors.

Do word families help Speaking or only Writing?+

Both. In Speaking they help you rephrase when you cannot recall one form. In Writing they support paraphrase and sentence variety.

What next?+

Take five AWL roots, build family cards, then write one Task 2 paragraph that uses at least three different forms accurately.
