Mistakes examiners hear every day

Most band ceilings come from habits, not from "not knowing enough English". The patterns below appear across Academic and General Training candidates.

MistakeWhy it hurtsQuick fix
Memorised scriptDoes not match the question; sounds recitedIdea bank + flexible answer shape
One-sentence Part 3No range or coherence to scoreStance → reason → example / contrast
Ignoring tenseAnswers a different questionEcho do / did / will before you extend
Over-correctionBreaks fluency with long restartsQuick repair, then continue
Finishing Part 2 earlyUnused time; thin developmentAdd feeling, result, or second example

Memorised scripts vs flexible structure

Scripts feel safe until the cue card or interview question shifts one word. Flexible structure transfers: direct answer, reason, detail; or beginning–middle–end on Part 2.

If you have been practising with fixed paragraphs, convert each into three bullet ideas and one example. Rehearse recombination, not recitation.

Fragile

Script habit

One 120-word hometown speech for every question.

  • •Ignores tense
  • •Irrelevant detail
  • •Hard to cut short

Robust

Flexible habit

Four content slots reused in different orders.

  • •Matches the question
  • •Natural length
  • •Easy to repair

A weekly mistake-audit loop

Record one Part 1 set, one Part 2 turn and two Part 3 answers. Listen once only for: long pauses, ignored question words, and one-sentence discussions. Fix one pattern per week.

Is a strong accent a mistake?+

No. Unclear chunking or stress that hides meaning is the issue — not sounding local to a particular country.

Should I apologise when I make an error?+

A quick repair is enough. Long apologies waste fluency time.
