The gap between band 6 and band 7 is smaller than it looks

In Academic Reading, band 6 is about 23 correct answers out of 40, and band 7 is about 30. That is seven more marks, or roughly two or three per passage. Most candidates stuck at band 6 do not need better English. They need fewer avoidable errors and better time control. Confirm Reading on IELTS test format (IELTS.org).

Before you change anything, find out where your marks are going. Count your mistakes by question type, by passage, and by cause. Use the score calculator to confirm how many extra marks your target band needs. How bands average: how IELTS is scored (IELTS.org). Practice: Cambridge English IELTS.

TargetAcademic raw scoreExtra marks from band 6
Band 6.0about 23baseline
Band 6.5about 27+4
Band 7.0about 30+7

Mistake 1: spending too long on passage 1 or 2

Candidates often use 25 minutes on the first passage because it feels safer to be thorough. Then they rush the third passage, which is usually the hardest, and lose 5-8 marks there. Reading has no spare time for transferring answers, so you must finish inside 60 minutes.

PassageTarget timeHard stop
Passage 115-17 minutesMove on at 18
Passage 219-20 minutesMove on at 40 total
Passage 322-24 minutesFinish at 60

★ Guess and mark, then move

If a question has taken more than 90 seconds, write a guess, mark it, and continue. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Return only if time remains. See Reading timing and question types for a full timing plan.

Mistake 2: reading every word first

Reading the passage in full before looking at questions feels logical but burns 6-8 minutes. IELTS rewards locating information, not understanding every sentence. A better method is to skim the title, first lines and last lines of paragraphs, read the questions, then scan.

  1. 1Skim for 2 minutesRead the title, subheadings, first sentence of each paragraph. Build a mental map.
  2. 2Read the questions and instructionsMark the word limits and question types before you scan.
  3. 3Scan for paraphrase, not exact wordsUse the order of questions to guide your search for most tasks.
  4. 4Read only the relevant sentences closelySpend your effort where the answer lives, not on the whole text.

Mistake 3: matching keywords instead of meaning

A word from the question appears in the passage and you grab the nearest answer. Examiners build traps around this habit. The same noun may appear in three places, but only one has the right meaning. In True/False/Not Given, the trap is even stronger: a keyword match makes the statement feel TRUE when the passage actually changes a detail.

Question statementPassageWrong answerRight answer
Most students prefer online classes.'Online classes are popular, but a majority of students say they favour in-person teaching.'TRUE (keyword 'online classes' matched)FALSE (the majority prefers in-person)
The scheme began in 2005.'The scheme was discussed in 2005 and launched two years later.'TRUE (year matched)FALSE (launched in 2007)

Drill this habit with the True/False/Not Given guide and Yes/No vs True/False Not Given. For heading tasks, the same trap appears as a heading that repeats a word but misses the main point. See Matching Headings.

Mistake 4: careless answer-writing errors

  • Spelling: a right idea with a wrong spelling scores zero. Copy from the passage letter by letter.
  • Word limit: 'NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS' means two. Three words is wrong even if correct in meaning.
  • Changed form: do not make plural words singular or turn nouns into verbs.
  • Wrong format: write 'C' not 'Paragraph C' when the task asks for a letter.
  • Unanswered questions: blank answers score nothing. Guess every one.
  • Lost place: in matching tasks, writing an answer next to the wrong number is a silent mark killer. Check numbers as you go.

A 3-minute final check

If you finish early, check only three things: word limits, spelling, and that every number has an answer. This catches more marks than rereading whole passages.

Mistake 5: practising without analysing

Doing more tests does not help if you never study your errors. The fastest way past band 6 is an error log. After each practice, write one line for each lost mark: question type, cause, fix.

Question typeCauseFix
True/False/Not GivenChose FALSE when passage was silentAsk: is there a contradicting sentence? If not, NOT GIVEN
Matching HeadingsPicked heading from first lineSummarise the paragraph in one sentence before choosing
Sentence CompletionThree words in a two-word limitCount before writing
Multiple ChoiceChose option matching a keywordTest every option against the text. See Multiple choice strategy
TimingPassage 3 unfinishedHard stop per passage
  1. Take a full mock test once a week under exam conditions.
  2. Between tests, do 1-2 question-type drills from Reading practice on your weakest type.
  3. Update your error log after each session and re-read it before the next.
  4. After two weeks, compare your raw score using the score calculator.

A 14-day plan to push from band 6 toward 7

  1. 1Days 1-2: baselineTake one full timed test. Log every mistake by type and cause.
  2. 2Days 3-6: fix your top two question typesUse the specific guides and do one drill each day. Keep each drill timed.
  3. 3Days 7-8: timing practicePractise passages with hard stops at 17, 20 and 23 minutes.
  4. 4Days 9-12: mixed setsDo one passage a day, then review in detail. Focus on paraphrase recognition.
  5. 5Days 13-14: retestTake another full test. Compare your errors and your raw score with the baseline.

How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Reading?+

About 30 out of 40 in Academic and about 34 in General Training. Exact conversion varies by test version, so use the score calculator.

Should I read the passage first or the questions first?+

Skim the passage for two minutes to get the structure, then read the questions and scan. Reading everything in detail first wastes time.

Is it better to guess or leave an answer blank?+

Always guess. There is no penalty for wrong answers in IELTS Reading.

How long does it take to move from band 6 to 7?+

With focused error analysis and weekly timed tests, many candidates gain 4-7 marks in 3-6 weeks, but it depends on your starting habits.

Which question types should I fix first?+

Start with the ones that cost you the most marks, usually True/False/Not Given, matching headings and multiple choice. See the guides on True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings.
