Formal vs Informal Vocabulary for IELTS
Choose the right IELTS register for Academic Writing, General Training letters and Speaking: formal alternatives, informal phrases that fit Part 1, and common tone mistakes.

Using an impressive word in the wrong situation still costs marks. Academic Task 2 wants controlled formal language. Speaking Part 1 wants natural conversation. General Training letters change tone with the reader: formal, semi-formal or informal.
Register means how formal your vocabulary and grammar sound. Strong candidates switch register deliberately instead of using one academic voice everywhere.

Natural spoken language for Speaking
Speaking should not sound like a memorised essay. Markers such as well, actually and to be honest are normal if they do not fill every pause. Part 3 can be more precise without copying Task 2 openers like Moreover.

A one-page register checklist before you submit
Before you finish Writing or leave the Speaking room in your mind, run a fast register scan. It catches the mistakes that make otherwise good vocabulary look uncontrolled.
- Academic essay: no kids / guys / stuff / a lot of / can't
- Academic essay: opinion framed as argument, not chatty I guess
- Speaking Part 1: natural phrases OK; avoid essay openers like Moreover
- Speaking Part 3: precise words OK; still sound spoken

Letter tone switches for General Training
GT Task 1 is a register test as much as a content test. The same request sounds different to a company, a neighbour or a friend.

Can I use contractions in Academic Writing?+
Better avoid them. Use do not, cannot and it is for a consistently formal tone.
Is informal language always bad in Speaking?+
No. Natural informal language is expected in Part 1. Problems start when slang is unclear, rude or forced.
Should Part 3 sound like Task 2?+
No. Part 3 can be more precise than Part 1, but it should still sound spoken. Avoid stacking academic connectors.
